SALT LAKE CITY  Avery Roberts posted 21 tackles and Calvin Tyler Jr. scored twice but Oregon State's late comeback attempt came up just short in a 30-24 loss to Utah Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Kolby Taylor scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass with five minutes remaining to pull the Beavers to within six. OSU, which had at one point been down 30-10, had an opportunity late to pull ahead. Oregon State (2-3 overall) made it into Utah (1-2) territory with less than 40 seconds to play. However, an incomplete pass on fourth down turned the ball over on downs.

Roberts' 21 tackles not only set a single-game high for the redshirt junior, but it also ties him for the third-best total in Oregon State history. Roberts also surpasses Arkansas' Bumper Pool for the most tackles in a game nationally this season. Pool had 20 versus Mississippi State in October.

Roberts has now posted four consecutive games with 10 or more tackles and the Pac-12 Conference's tackles leader upped his total to 65 this season.

Tyler made it a 13-point game with his second score of the game, coming on a 6-yard rush with 11:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Nolan, making his first career FBS start, completed 20 passes for 202 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 36 yards on 13 carries.

Nine different Oregon State receivers caught at least one pass, with Zeriah Beason totaling four catches for 37 yards.

Defensively, Roberts was backed up by Omar Speights, who totaled 13 tackles for his second double-digit effort of the season.

Utah held the lead at the half, at 16-10. The Beavers scored on a 33-yard field goal by Everett Hayes at the 9:16 mark of the second quarter. Tyler ended the half with his first career rushing score, on a 1-yarder with 50 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The Utes scored their first-half points via three field goals and a 1-yard rush by Ty Jordan.

Oregon State returns home next Saturday, Dec. 12, when the Beavers host Stanford at Reser Stadium.
