On Wednesday morning in the Bay Area, it looked as if the world were ending.
So of course, people took to social media to post about the eerie glowing reddish-orange sky as multiple wildfires continue raging throughout Northern California. According to experts, the creepy effect is from all of the smoke sitting at lower elevations, filtering the sun and producing the various shades.
Here are some of the reactions and photos from Bay Area residents:
The scenes are downright apocalyptic:

Orange San Francisco sky. The smoke from the fires is thick in the air, the tongue and the back of the throat. Mask up, stay safe, fight global warming, and support our firefighters. #CaliforniaWildfires pic.twitter.com/EGg6MQWrvh

Some people noticed that snapping photos on their smartphones produced images that didn’t quite match the intense oranges and reds of the sky. According to Chronicle photo staffers, that’s because digital cameras have an auto setting to correct for color and exposure. The camera is trying to make the blacks appear black, and whites appear white, so it diminishes the intensity of the sky’s color. Digital cameras also tend to have trouble processing colors on the red spectrum.
My phone is having trouble capturing just how yellow the sky is right now. It keeps lightening it to a less sickly hue. pic.twitter.com/sUbwmv22oh
