STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Better late than never, I guess.
The World Health Organization the other day said that maybe we’d all been a little hasty in rejecting the idea that the COVID-19 virus may have leaked out of a lab at the Wuhan Institute for Virology.
Ya think?
WHO leader Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there had been a “premature push” to rule out the possibility of a lab leak.
Ghebreyesus also said that China’s Communist rulers hadn’t fully cooperated with pandemic investigations. There have been problems of transparency.
Wow.
It’s quite a turnaround for the WHO.
The organization from the start has been in the hip pocket of the Communist Chinese rulers when it came to the coronavirus pandemic.
The WHO and Ghebreyesus backed early Chinese claims that COVID-19 was not transmissible between humans. We all know how that one turned out for the world.
The WHO also gave cover to the Communist Chinese junta when it came to questions of a lab leak, standing with those who were certain that COVID-19 evolved in nature.
Well, they were certain as long as President Donald Trump was in the White House. Now that Joe Biden is president, everything’s on the table, including the possibility of a lab leak.
We’ve sure have come a long way.
If the WHO is finally jumping ship on the Communist Chinese, it makes you wonder if some bad news is coming in terms of the Wuhan lab. Ghebreyesus may want to make sure he’s out of the blast zone.
The WHO’s shifting stance comes amid increasing talk that we’ve entered a new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Infection rates are spiking across the United States and in other parts of the world.
Remember how we celebrated the end of lockdown just a few weeks ago? We all flocked to bars and restaurants, ballgames and concerts. Many of us haven’t worn a face covering in a while.
It already seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it?
Los Angeles has reintroduced mask mandates for the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike.
The New York Yankees series against the rival Boston Red Sox was delayed because some Bronx Bombers tested positive.
We’re becoming a house divided over vaccinations. There’s talk that the fully vaccinated could need booster shots.
We’re told that vaccine misinformation is putting lives at risk. The White House is flagging such “misinformation” on Facebook so that Big Tech can wipe the slate clean.
It’s creating a horrific stew of mistrust in America. Even more so than what was already coursing through the body politic.
Who knows what the next few weeks or months will bring, especially if the numbers take a real jump once cold and flu season rolls around?
If the virus was engineered in a lab, who can say how it might mutate and how strong it might remain?
The people who engineered it, actually.
If it was created in a lab, those who did the creating know better what they wrought. They should know how to counteract it.
The WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Dr. Anthony Fauci didn’t want to grill China about possible lab leaks when the virus started galloping across the globe 15 months ago.
They must do so now. Millions of lives and trillions of dollars in economic activity depend on it.
Or would they prefer us to mask up again? To socially distance again? To close the economy again? To shutter schools and send schoolchildren home to “learn” remotely? To have people lose jobs? To have people get sick and die?
Isn’t it about time we found out exactly what we’re dealing with here?
