Rested … or rusty.

That’s the big question facing the BYU football team coming off of last week’s bye and preparing to play at Georgia Southern on Saturday.

“After 10 weeks of games, it did feel a little off,” Cougar sophomore tight end Dallin Holker said during Monday’s teleconference. “You still try to keep the same mindset of trying to get better and win games. The whole season you strive to keep that mindset even if it is a bye week.”

Cougar head coach Kalani Sitake said he felt like the break was time well spent for his team.

“We had a good week off over the weekend,” Sitake said. “A lot of the guys took advantage of it. We had a good week of lifting and some practices in there. We changed up the schedule last week just because just looking at what the team needed more than what I thought was going to work. I just kind of played it by ear, seeing how things progressed during the week. We had some time together as a team and gave the guys some time off. Now we’re back at it.”

But he knows his BYU team can’t afford to come out flat in it’s next contest against the Eagles.

“We tried to stay on top of everything and not have a complete week off,” Sitake said. “We wanted to give them enough time to be rested but enough work so they don’t get rusty. The mindset today will be to get ready to roll and if there is any rust, to shake it off now. Saturday is not the time to be struggling.”

Cougar junior defensive back D’Angelo Mandel explained that BYU attempted to stay sharp by putting in work even when there wasn’t a game.

“We practiced most of the days last week and we wanted to make sure we were still in tip-top shape,” Mandell said. “A lot of times guys want to rest and kick back, but the coaches wanted to make sure everything was still where it was supposed to be, so that’s why we practiced last week.”

Holker said the Cougars pushed themselves physically to attempt to improve.

“We had some hard practices and we were lifting pretty hard,” Holker said. “While we had our practices, we went hard. We know our true purpose and what we are trying to do as a team even during the bye week.”

BYU linebacker Ben Bywater said that one of the emphasis for the defense was to work on tackling.

“One of the things that we did was just get back to one-on-ones, tackling and stuff,” Bywater said. “That’s not always the funnest, tackling and the fundamentals. I play linebacker obviously and so some things that we’re focused on is wrapping up, tackling, driving your hips, getting off blocks, those are things that you can control. It’s about doing things the right way to get the fundamentals down that are going to make you a better football player. And then when they become second nature, you don’t have to think about them.”

He admitted, however, that is was nice to be able to have the reset during the season.

“We were playing a ton of games in a row, so I think it was good to have the week off,” Bywater said. “I was grateful for it and I think everyone was. It helps your body to recover. After 10 weeks in a row, you are a little bit exhausted, so it’s good to relax and get your mind right. We are feeling confident.”
