‘A dream come true’: Nazareth girls basketball’s Brugler to play at Saint Joseph’s - lehighvalleylive.com

Nazareth junior basketball player Talya Brugler has watched her sister, Tessa, compete at Bucknell University.

Now, the younger Brugler sister will be at the Division-I level.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference MVP verbally committed to Saint Joseph’s University on Wednesday.

"For me to get the opportunity to play at the next level is a dream come true,” Talya Brugler said. "It has been a goal of mine since I picked up a basketball and I’m very thankful and grateful that I was blessed with the opportunity to fulfill my dream. It is also really cool that my sister got to do the same because it was a goal of hers as well. Also, I knew what to expect and she guided me a lot throughout the recruiting process.”

Brugler, who became the first junior in program history to reach 1,000 career points, thinks the Philadelphia school is the right one for her.

"I really liked the location of the school and what they had to offer academically,” Brugler said. "I want to major in sports marketing and they have a really good program for that. Basketball wise, it is a family atmosphere that has a common goal of winning championships and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

The Hawks went 9-20 overall and 3-13 in the Atlantic 10 Conference last season.

Brugler was also strongly considering the University of Massachusetts, Towson University and Drexel University.

"Saint Joe’s feels like it’s the right fit for me academically and athletically,” Brugler said. "Also, the location played a major part in it because it’s the perfect distance from home and in a great part of Philadelphia.”

She considered following in her sister’s footsteps, who will be a senior at Bucknell next season. But the younger Brugler decided she wanted to make her own name for herself at the next level.

"It was an option for me to play at Bucknell, but academically they didn’t quite have what I was looking for, and also I wanted to make my own path,” Brugler said.

The 6-foot-1 forward was key to Nazareth’s history-making season this winter.

The Blue Eagles advanced to the PIAA Class 6A quarterfinals for the first time in program history before the tournament was canceled due to the coronavirus.

"She became a leader, which was big for our team without any seniors this season,” Nazareth coach Rich Bickert said. "She became more of a vocal leader as well as leading with playing hard at practice as well as games.”

"By end of the year, everyone on the team was following her lead and worked harder to get better,” Bickert added.

Brugler scored 586 points this season to set a program record.

She averaged 19.5 points per game and added 258 rebounds, 90 steals and 60 blocks this season.

"Without her, our success this past season would not have happened,” Bickert said. “Just being the leader we needed on and off the court and making all her teammates better.”

"Being a part of our breakout season was such an amazing feeling,” Brugler said. "However, we aren’t done yet and we still have some unfinished business to take care of next year. We have goals as a team and we are hungry for that state championship next year.”

The Blue Eagles will return everybody next season and will be ready for big things after seeing their season cut short in 2020.

“There’s really not another way to describe it other than unfortunate,” Brugler said about having the state tournament stopped. "It’s not something that we can control, but I think it’s a really good motivator for next season.”

Before she gets to represent Nazareth for one more campaign, Brugler took some time to reflect on everybody who made her journey to Saint Joseph’s possible.

"I wanted to give a quick shoutout to everyone who helped me along the way to make this possible,” Brugler said. "My high school coaches (Coach Bic, Coach Jer (Jeremy Coxe), Coach Joe (McCallum), Coach Amie (Tracy)), my AAU coaches (Dean Reiman, Mark Morrow), my trainer (Jermaine Wilson), my parents (Brent and Tonya), my brother Bailey, and my sister Tessa, along with all my friends, family members, and teammates.”

"It was a great feeling and it showed that my hard work really paid off,” Brugler added about her personal accomplishments this season. "I have always been a pretty humble kid growing up and it was such a humbling experience for me when I scored 1,000 points and when I broke a few records. As always though, I like to give credit where it’s due, so I wouldn’t have accomplished the things I did this year without the help of my teammates, my coaches and my family.”
