Come on, get Happiness - Lowell Sun

Each and every morning before I get ready for my busy day ahead, I pause to read my daily email from Project Happiness.

Randy Taran is a filmmaker, author, businesswoman, and founder and CEO of Project Happiness, a nonprofit organization that empowers youths and communities to create greater happiness in their lives and in the world.

Drawn from research in neuroscience, mindfulness and positive psychology, Project Happiness uses books, films, social media and educational programs to teach vital social and emotional skills to empower children, families and communities.

Though her inspiration was personal, Taran created this pro-purpose, nonprofit journey hoping to impact 10 million lives.

Project Happiness uses each day of the week to give us a life lesson. I hope you enjoy just a few examples of some of my favorites. Each day is different and leaves you with a bit of calmness, bringing you closer to happiness.

MINDFUL MONDAY Mindfullness, Focus, Mindset

We all need to practice more mindfulness, being aware of the present moment, which is difficult to do in such a crazy busy world.

“There’s a saying that change is the only constant in life,” Taran says. “As we weather through life’s events and changes, simple mindfulness practices ground us as life’s events unfold around us. Even as we’re cooking, washing dishes, writing an email, we can be presently aware of our breath. When we are grounded in ourselves and our breath, we’re more able to handle situations that may come our way. We’re able to take a pause when we need to. Try being mindful as you go about your day and see how it feels.”

GRATI-TUESDAY Gratitude, Appreciation, Love

Research has found that gratitude can significantly increase your happiness and protect you from stress, negativity, anxiety and depression.

“Surround yourself with inspired, excited and grateful people. Energy is contagious so give the good stuff a chance to rub off on you! Similarly, avoid people who may consistently drain you with their negativity or ungratefulness. You can try to share your contagious positive energy. The more grateful you are, the more you notice the blessings around you. How can you bring the most love into your experience today?”

Hint: Start with appreciation … love and appreciation are identical frequencies!

WELLNESS WEDNESDAYS Body Wellness, Motivation, Self-Compassion

Happiness is good for your health, and vice versa. Taking care of your physical wellness may well be the most effective instant happiness booster of all.

Taran says, “Peace is always available, 100 percent free of charge and already wholly inside of you. It’s just a matter of opening up to it. Tap into this stillness today. Learn it intimately, so you can access it at any time, under any conditions. Let today’s peace recharge you and pre-pave the way for your days ahead. Take this time of peace and build a reservoir of resilience so that you can brave any future storms ahead.”

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY Compassion, Giving Back, Altruism

Happiness and altruism are intimately linked — doing good is an essential ingredient to being happy, and happiness helps spark kindness and generosity.

“It is said that the greatest joy comes from giving and serving, so pay it forward and distribute a few random acts of kindness. Focus on supporting others in your life without expecting anything in return; you’ll think less about what you want and find joy in the act of giving and serving. Random acts of kindness can be as simple as listening to someone who had a hard day or greeting someone with a smile.”

FREEDOM FRIDAY Authenticity, Vulnerability, Forgiveness, Letting Go

When you embrace an authentic and vulnerable stance to life, people will meet you there in that openness, allowing you to experience true connection. Forgiveness is a by-product of vulnerability — so try letting go — for YOU.

“Try this Freedom Challenge: When you stop trying to grasp, own and control the world around you, you gain freedom that fulfills you instead of grasping at something that is not within your reach. There are many factors out of your control and the best thing to do is to act intentionally without expecting to control the results. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, ‘Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything — anger, anxiety or possessions — we cannot be free.”

In one word, what are you willing to let go of?

SOCIAL SATURDAY Social Connection, Nature Connection, Empathy

Our busy lives often leave us stretched for time to connect with others. However, science suggests that social connection is most important. Today, it is even more essential to connect — while practicing social distancing — to one another.

This is one of my favorite quotes from Taran: “When in doubt, look to the sky. Nature’s abundance always has the power to rejuvenate us … whether it’s taking a walk in the park, going on a hike or stargazing. Remember that we live in an amazing world full of many free and bountiful enjoyments. Just as our thoughts and goals may take us on a wild ride, take a moment to stay grounded and remember all the good that is here and now. Remember also that we are part of a large universe, and sometimes we may be giving more attention to negative things and forgetting the beauty around us.”

SOUL SUNDAY Meaning, Purpose, Strengths, Soul

Love what you do! Research shows that happiness fuels success, not the other way around. The type of work you do is key, engaging in meaningful activity is a big indicator of happiness.
Taran says, “You may not see it today or tomorrow, but you will look back in a few years and be absolutely perplexed and awed by how every little thing added up and brought you somewhere wonderful — or where you always wanted to be. You will be grateful that things didn’t work out the way you once wanted them to.”

Disappointment is not a destination; it’s just one part of the human journey.

“Happiness, like all emotions, is contagious; for ourselves and generations to come, let’s create a world where everyone can thrive,” Taran concludes.
