Ted Cruz faces backlash over 'Come and Take it' Thanksgiving meme - Chron

Ted Cruz is in hot water again.

As the city of El Paso struggles with an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations and "a spike in deaths," according to Mayor Dee Margo, the Texas senator took to Twitter over the weekend to basically let everyone know he still plans to celebrate Thanksgiving, COVID-19 pandemic and all.

His message came in the form of a "war on Thanksgiving" meme featuring a turkey with the words "come and take it."

While Cruz didn't add a caption or additional details regarding his meme choice, people immediately began to criticize him for his lack of care surrounding the virus that has infected more than 1 million Texans.

'QUITE WORRIED': Houston hospital leaders sound alarm about COVID-19 spike

"Twitter isn’t real life. Memes aren’t legislation," lifelong St. Louis resident and former fire captain Gregg Favre tweeted. "Americans are suffering & too many - too far removed from our struggle - are thinking about re-election."

"Its bad enough Ted Cruz encourages people to ignore #COVID19 restrictions for selfish political reasons," said the Lawyers for Good Government's official Twitter account. "Its worse that he doesn’t care how many will die."

Many made note of the fact that thousands of drivers were lined up at the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas just last week due to the fallout they've suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The food bank ended up distributing at least 600,000 pounds of turkey to 25,000 individuals, NTFB spokeswoman Anna Kurian shared with CNN's Melissa Alonso.

Cruz's meme selection choice was ironic to some people, considering he blamed Joe Biden as well Democratic governors and mayors for being the reason COVID-19 is still being spoken about in the media.

"All they'll need is Election Day, and suddenly their willingness to just destroy people's lives and livelihood," Cruz said, characterizing the outbreak as a political weapon being wielded by Democrats. The clip resurfaced from a July 22 interview with The Hill.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged Americans to avoid travel for Thanksgiving and not to spend the holiday with people from outside their household. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner agrees and recently told residents during a press conference not to invite COVID to Thanksgiving dinner.

"This virus thrives on gatherings and will take advantage of holiday festivities to sicken our loved ones and further spread through our community," he said at the time.
