Brandon Lewis and James Outman hit clutch home runs in Loons’ come-from-behind win - True Blue LA

It was a day filled with home runs, crazy pitching box scores and some wild come-from behind victories.

Players of the day

We’ll have to give the honor to two separate players, as they both contributed in the Loons’ comeback victory. Brandon Lewis hit a three-run homer to tie things in the eighth inning while James Outman hit a two-run homer in the ninth to give the Loons the lead, and ultimately the victory.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Just throw this one away and pretend like it never happened. OKC fell to the Salt Lake Bees (Angels) 12-2. Things were fine until the fifth inning. The game was tied at one a piece and it was a relatively normal game.

Yefry Ramirez, who was recently named the Triple-A West Pitcher of the month, was cruising through the first four innings. Then things hit a wall in the fifth. An error extended the inning instead of ending it and the Bees scored four runs in the inning. Ramirez was chased from the game after allowing five runs to score, but only one of them was earned. OKC’s bullpen then allowed three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Double-A Tulsa

A five-run inning killed the Drillers, as they fell to the Arkansas Travelers (Mariners) 7-4. The Travelers scored five runs in the fifth inning, doing damage against starter Michael Grove. It continues to be a difficult season for LA’s second rounder in 2018, as he now owns an 8.10 ERA in 11 starts this season.

The Drillers offense couldn’t capitalize on countless opportunities. They were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 runners on base. Miguel Vargas hit his fifth homer since joining Tulsa, giving him a combined 12 homers on the season. Michael Busch hit his seventh homer, his first home run since May 27. Jeren Kendall also hit a homer, his ninth of the season.

High-A Great Lakes

The Loons needed a late-night spark to pull out the rally, as they scored five runs in the final two innings to beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) 8-6.

With two on and two out, Brandon Lewis homered to tie the game at six a piece. In 49 games between the Quakes and the Loons, the 22-year-old has hit 12 home runs and has driven in 43 runs. The Loons then took the lead in the ninth, as James Outman hit a two-run homer to put GL ahead by two.

Things got a little interesting in the ninth as the TinCaps had two reach base. Cameron Gibbens recorded three strikeouts though to win the game for the Loons. Gibbens tossed two scoreless innings and had five strikeouts on the night. He’s been excellent this season between both the Quakes and the Loons, as he’s posted a 1.07 ERA in 25 13 innings with 51 strikeouts.

Low-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes lost a heart-breaker, as they allowed eight runs in the final two innings to lose to the Fresno Grizzlies (Rockies) 10-9. Fresno scored five runs in the eighth inning, trimming their deficit to only two runs. In the ninth, a walk and a double brought in a run, which was then followed by the game-winning two-run homer from Grant Lavigne.

For the game, RC tallied 16 hits with five different players finishing with at least two. Six different players drove in a run. Jorbit Vivas had himself a night, as he had four hits and scored three runs. He hit the lone homer of the night for Rancho, his eighth of the season. Eddys Leonard had two hits with two runs driven in and Diego Cartaya had two hits with one run driven in.
