First Call: Will Steven Nelson come back? More talk of discipline for Steelers over handling of David DeCastro's injury - TribLIVE

Thursday’s “First Call” raises a red flag for the Steelers when it comes to the release of David DeCastro.

Former Steelers linebacker Bud Dupree gushes about his time in Pittsburgh. Could Steven Nelson come back to the Steelers secondary?

The Pirates have their work cut out for them with the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers coming to PNC Park.

And a local product shines at the College World Series.

Much love from Bud

Despite signing with the Tennessee Titans in free agency, Bud Dupree had nothing but good things to say about his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday.

Dupree made an appearance on the NFL Network and gushed about his time in Pittsburgh.

“Those guys showed me nothing but love,” the edge rusher said. “Once they accept you in that city, they accept you forever. I’ve got a lot of great friends in that city. I’ve got a lot of great friends that are still on that team … All those people, they are my real people. At the end of the day, it ain’t nothing fake over there, man.”

Meanwhile, Dupree also provided an update on his recovery from ACL surgery. In the recent past, he has shown nothing but pure optimism about getting back on the field, fully healthy in 2021. On Wednesday, he seemed more tempered.

Dupree totaled 39.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles over his six-year Steelers career. He was injured during the Steelers’ 11th game last year. The team only won one time in their final six games.

Trouble afoot for Steelers

NFL insider John Clayton was on 93.7 The Fan Wednesday. And he isn’t ruling out the prospect of discipline for the Steelers as a result of never listing David DeCastro on the injury report for his ankle problem last year.

DeCastro—who was listed for other injury concerns—has already said that the ankle nagged at him throughout last year and that he has had two surgeries on it. The need for a third procedure is what precipitated the Steelers’ release of him after minicamp last week.

“They could be under a little bit of investigation for that,” Clayton said. “What it would mean is that they would get a fine. (The NFL) could take a draft choice. They could take it that severe.”

Meanwhile, Clayton praised the signing of Trai Turner to replace DeCastro at right guard. Clayton says that if Turner is truly over the groin injury that hampered him last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, he could positively impact the Steelers refurbished offensive front.

Clayton also added it would be “wise” for the Steelers to investigate a return for Steven Nelson.

“He is a good player,” Clayton said of Nelson. “Why nobody has gone for him, I don’t know. I thought maybe Kansas City would bring him back. I’m a little surprised he is still out there … I think Steve would be wise to bring back.”

The Steelers signed Nelson away from the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency before 2019. He was an effective starter for two years but was released in March because of salary-cap concerns. The franchise saved $8.25 million against the salary cap as a result.

Now, because of DeCastro’s release, the Steelers have some money to spend. They could bring Nelson back at a lesser price given that the Steelers are still thin at the position.

Wrong team, wrong time

After getting swept by the lowly Colorado Rockies, the even more lowly Pirates probably want no part of the Milwaukee Brewers (48-33). But that is who they are getting for four games at PNC Park this weekend.

The NL Central-leading Brewers are the hottest team in baseball right now. They have won eight in a row. And manager Craig Counsell’s team is fresh off a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs. During that series at American Family Field, Milwaukee outscored the Cubs 31-12.

The Brewers have scored 59 runs during the eight-game win streak, outscoring opponents by an average of 7.4 runs per game to 2.8. Not to mention, Milwaukee is one of the best road teams in the National League, with 22 victories away from home. The San Francisco Giants (24) are the only NL team with more.

Meanwhile, the Pirates (29-50) are coming off three straight losses in the normally hitter-friendly Coors Field. But the Buccos bats managed a putrid two runs in three games during their time in Denver.

It sure looks like “Re-Opening Weekend” at PNC Park could be “case closed” in favor of Milwaukee.

Mercer’s moment

Former Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer homered Wednesday for the Washington Nationals as they thumped the Tampa Bay Rays 15-6.

That was Mercer’s first homer and RBI in 74 at-bats in Washington. He’s hitting .270 overall.

Mercer wasn’t the only former Pirate who had a big day for the Nationals. Josh Bell was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two walks. Josh Harrison drove in two runs and was 2-for-2 as well.

Bow down to Bednar

Valencia’s Will Bednar was named the most outstanding player of the College World Series Wednesday night as his Mississippi State Bulldogs claimed the NCAA national title over Vanderbilt with a 9-0 win.

The Mars High School product threw six shutout, no-hit innings, walking three and striking out four in the decisive Game 3. Bednar retired the last 15 batters he faced.

Bednar had three CWS appearances. He allowed three earned runs in 18⅓ innings, while allowing five hits and striking out 26.

Bednar is the younger brother of Pirates relief pitcher David Bednar. He could be a first-round selection in this month’s MLB Draft.
