Timbers come back from early deficit to beat Minnesota 3-1 in MLS playoffs - The Athletic

The Portland Timbers made the most of their home-field advantage, coming back from an early 1-0 deficit to comfortably beat Minnesota United FC by a 3-1 margin.

The Western Conference’s fourth seed held its composure after conceding in the 11th minute, finding an equalizer through Larrys Mabiala in the 43rd minute to enter the break on level footing. Sebastian Blanco quickly gave Portland the advantage in the 47th minute before doubling the lead with an impressive shot from deep, capitalizing on a lack of defensive pressure from the Loons midfield.

Minnesota entered the game with some late turmoil after starting goalkeeper Tyler Miller announced he tested positive for COVID-19, giving Dayne St. Clair a start between the posts.

Perhaps the late change impacted the defensive shape, as the Canada international wouldn’t have had a full week of reps with the starters. Whatever the case, the Loons’ early goal ultimately did more favors for Portland than the visitors, lighting a fire under them and getting the Timbers Army fired up.

They’ll have to recover quickly from what was a scrappy match, as they’ll take the field on Thanksgiving as late afternoon guests at the Colorado Rapids.
