Hillsboro, OR – Fifth-ranked Eastern Washington took advantage of a pair of second-half turnovers by Portland State, leading them to 28 straight points and an eventual 42-28 over the Vikings at Hillsboro Stadium.
The Eagles All-American quarterback Eric Barriere threw for 320 yards and five touchdowns in the game, and led the team back from a 21-14 third-quarter deficit.
Barriere completed 26 of 34 passes for his 320 yards. Meanwhile, Viking quarterback Davis Alexander was 34-52 for 338 yards and two scores.
"Eric Barriere is electric. He is a once every 20 years kind of guy. I think you saw two of the best quarterbacks in the FCS," said Viking Coach Bruce Barnum after the game, referring to Alexander and Barriere.
The Eagles raised their record to 9-2 on the season and finished 6-2 in the Big Sky Conference. They will await their post-season matchup as announced by the NCAA on Sunday. The Vikings ended the season at 5-6, 4-4 in the Big Sky.
Before the game, Barnum said he wanted to win the time of possession battle by as large a margin as possible to keep the ball away from Barriere. The plan worked perfectly to open the game. The Vikings took the kickoff and plodded 75 yards over 15 plays. When Malik Walker scored on a fourth-and-goal play from the one, PSU had burned more than nine minutes off the clock.
The Eagles came back with 75-yard drive of their own. This one took only three minutes as Barriere completed a 12-yard score to Andrew Boston.
With the game tied 7-7, PSU went methodical again. It only took nine plays to score, but the Vikings ran another 4:34 off the clock. Alexander hit Darien Chase on an 11-yard touchdown pass. PSU led 14-7 with 13:23 left in the first half and Eastern Washington had only run nine plays.
Again, the Eagles answered with a quick score. It was nine plays and 80 yards, but Eastern Washington used only 2:32 on the clock. Another Barriere TD pass of 14 yards, this time to Elton Chism, tied the game at 14-14.
The teams traded punts on the next two possessions. When the Vikings took over at their own 47 there was 8:23 remaining in the half. PSU was able to run out the entire clock. However, a 28-yard field goal attempt on the final play was wide right and the teams went to the locker room tied.
PSU had run 40 plays and burned 23:48 on the game clock. The Eagles ran only 21 plays and had the ball for 6:12 of the half. PSU out-gained Eastern Washington 199-161.
Portland State got the lead back on a 42-yard touchdown strike from Alexander to Beau Kelly early in the second half. The Eagles matched it with another short Barriere touchdown pass.
Then the Vikings had a breakdown. The Eagles forced fumbles on PSU's next two possessions. The first recovery came at the Eagles 38, the next at the PSU 23. Both turned into scoring drives for Eastern Washington as Barriere threw two more touchdown passes. That was three straight scores for Eastern and they led 35-21 with 4:31 to go in the third quarter.
"I figured we would come back after the first turnover, but then we had a second," Barnum said. "You can't have two turnovers against a football team that good."
On the Vikings' next possession, needing to play catch up, they went for it on fourth-and-three near midfield but were stopped. The Eagles eventually turned that into a score early in the fourth quarter. Up 42-21, it was Eastern Washington's game.
PSU came back to score quickly on a one-yard run by Jalynnee McGee. Then, they recovered an on-side kick. But the Eagles were able to get a punt and two fourth-down stops on PSU's final three series of the game.
Mataio Talalemotu led the Vikings with 10 receptions for 108 yards. Chase had nine catches for 71 yards and rushed twice for 28 yards. Kelly added seven receptions for 125 yards.
On defense, linebacker Parker McKenna led the way with eight tackles. Safety Broderick Harrell had six tackles and a pass breakup.
