The extreme makeover to Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s coaching staff finally is taking shape via promotions to two player development staffers.
Dillon Lawson will be the Yankees’ new hitting coach after three seasons as minor-league hitting coordinator and Desi Druschel is being bumped into a newly created assistant pitching coach position after joining the organization last January as manager of pitch development, The Athletic reported on Friday.
The Yankees still have four more spots to fill — two assistant hitting coaches, first base coach and coaching assistant/bullpen catcher. The Yankees will go with three pitching and hitting coaches for the first time next season.
“I feel like we are down the tracks with our major-league coaching staff,” general manager Brian Cashman told the Athletic on Friday. “We’re dotting I’s and crossing the T’s.”
Lawson and Druschel, who will work under pitching coach Matt Blake and bullpen coach Mike Harkey, join former Mets manager Luis Rojas as newcomers on Boone’s staff. Fired by the Mets after the 2021 season, Rojas was hired on Nov. 15 by the Yankees in November to coach third base.
Rojas replaces Phil Nevin, who was fired after the 2021 season (and later hired by the Los Angeles Angels to perform the same duties).
The Yankees also canned hitting coach Marcus Thames and assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere. Two others left on their own for other positions, as first base coach Reggie Willits quit to become a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma baseball team and coaching assistant/bullpen catcher Radley Haddad departed to become the Pittsburgh Pirates’ game planning and strategy coach.
The lone returnees on Boone’s staff are bench coach Carlos Mendoza, catching instructor Tanner Swanson, coaching assistant/instant replay coordinator Brett Weber, Blake and Harkey.
