MLB Lockout officially begins as owners, players can’t come to last-second agreement - masslive.com

There was no last-second miracle. The Major League Baseball owners and the MLB Players Association didn’t come to an agreement before the collective bargaining agreement expired at midnight and the owners have officially locked the players out, ending 26-years of labor peace in the sport.

There can be no transactions or interactions between the teams and players on their 40-man rosters until a new agreement is reached.

Each side issued a statement.

Commissioner Rob Manfred posted a letter to fans on MLB.com.

It included the following paragraphs:

“This defensive lockout was necessary because the Players Association’s vision for Major League Baseball would threaten the ability of most teams to be competitive. It’s simply not a viable option. From the beginning, the MLBPA has been unwilling to move from their starting position, compromise, or collaborate on solutions.

“When we began negotiations over a new agreement, the Players Association already had a contract that they wouldn’t trade for any other in sports. Baseball’s players have no salary cap and are not subjected to a maximum length or dollar amount on contracts. In fact, only MLB has guaranteed contracts that run 10 or more years, and in excess of $300 million. We have not proposed anything that would change these fundamentals. While we have heard repeatedly that free agency is “broken” – in the month of November $1.7 billion was committed to free agents, smashing the prior record by nearly 4x. By the end of the offseason, Clubs will have committed more money to players than in any offseason in MLB history.”

The Players Association and its executive director Tony Clark each released separate statements.

From the MLBPA via Twitter:

“This shutdown is a dramatic measure regardless of the timing. It is not required by law or for any other reason. It was the owners’ choice, plain and simple, specifically calculated to pressure players into relinquishing right and benefits and abandoning good faith bargaining proposals that will benefit not just players but the game and industry as a whole.

“These tactics are not new. We have been here before, and players have risen to the occasion time and again guided by a solidarity that has been forged over generations. We will do so again here.

“We remain determined to return to the field under the terms of a negotiated collective bargaining agreement that is fair to all parties and provides fans with the best version of the game we all love.”

Clark issued his own statement:

“The drastic and unnecessary measure will not affect the players resolve to reach a fair contract. We remain committed to negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement that enhances competition, improves the product for fans, advances the rights in benefits of our membership.”

The Winter Meetings were cancelled shortly after the start of the lockout and MLB.com took down all content related to current players with this explanation:

“Until a new agreement is reached, there will be limitations on the type of content we display. As a result, you will see a lot more content that focuses on the game’s rich history. Once a new agreement is reached, the up-to-the minute news and analysis you have come to expect will continue as usual.”
