BOULDER, Colo. – No. 19 Illinois volleyball (1-3) dropped a hard-fought four-set battle to No. 14 Washington (3-1) on Sunday in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge from the CU Events Center in Boulder, Colo. The Illini's Raina Terry filled the stat sheet including a match-high 17 kills while striking at a .483 hitting clip.
Terry's weekend play was recognized and earned her Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge All-Tournament Team honors. She tallied a combined 26 kills, four aces, four blocks and operated at a .352 hitting percentage.
Washington jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Illini before a Kyla Swanson kill put the Orange and Blue on the board. Illinois called a timeout trailing 12-6 early in the frame but the Huskies would keep their foot on the gas and take the frame 25-12. Terry took five swings in the set and collected a kill on each.
Second set action saw 12 ties and eight lead changes throughout play. Washington hit double digits first with a 10-8 advantage. From there, the Illini responded with a 4-0 run to force a timeout by the Huskies. The score evened back up at 13-13 before Illinois worked out to a 23-21 lead forcing UW's second timeout. The Huskies scored the next point to get within one but Terry's 11th kill of the match pushed the Illini lead to 24-22. On the next point, Kyla Swanson and Jessica Nunge teamed up for a block to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 set two win. The Illini racked up six of their 13 blocks in the frame.'
Illinois sped out to an 8-4 lead in set three using a 5-0 run to force an early Washington timeout. Out of the break, the Huskies pieced together a 4-0 run themselves to knot the set at 8-8. The Orange and Blue took another lead at 12-9 and would push that to a 16-14 advantage after back-to-back blocks. A Washington challenge would reverse a call to even the score at 20-20 and the Huskies outlasted the Illini in a 25-22 set three decision.
Set four saw the Illini own a slim lead early before the benches would work out to a 15-15 draw. From that point, however, Washington outscored the Illini 10-4 and would end the match on a 3-0 run to secure the 25-19 victory.
Sunday action between the squads saw 28 ties and 13 lead changes across four sets of back-and-forth play.
Terry's 17 kills off 29 swings produced an efficient .483 hitting percentage for the junior. She added a pair of services aces, five digs and four blocks – one solo – in the four-set decision. Nunge joined Terry with double digit kills, coming in at 10. She added three assists and three blocks as well. Kayla Burbage (9), Swanson (5) and Hinton (4) got in on the offensive action as well.
Illini libero Caroline Barnes racked up a season-best 17 digs to go along with an ace and an assist. Brooke Mosher added 10 digs of her own to accompany her four assists.
Illinois tallied a season-high 13 blocks. Swanson and Hinton each recorded six, joined by Terry's four and three apiece from Nunge, Burbage and Diana Brown.
Brown dished out 38 assists, adding an ace and seven digs as well.
Next weekend, the Illini will continue their non-conference trek across the country, heading East to the Dayton Invitational for the third week of the season.
