MCVEYTOWN — Call it a country comeback.

With the 36th Annual Country Memories Day in McVeytown less than a week away, organizers are hoping this year’s event is the biggest to date. At least, since the arrival of the pandemic.

“We are really trying to come back after COVID,” volunteer organizer Holly Coppersmith said. “We’ve put in a few extra activities to get people back.”

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, along Market Street in McVeytown. It’s presented by the McVeytown Fire Co. and in conjunction with the McVeytown Lions Club.

“The current Country Memories Day committee is comprised of a handful of local men and women,” Coppersmith said. “We grew up going to this annual tradition and didn’t want to see it end.

“We know that memories are made on days like these,” she added. “It’s been a family-friendly event from the very beginning. ‘Come make a memory’ is the slogan for the event.”

Market Street will be closed to traffic, so patrons can check out the more than 100 vendors with uniquely creative items. There will also be food trucks, shopping, entertainment on the square and more.

Breakfast will be served near the town square from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Returning favorites and first-time vendors, including food and many different makers, artisans and craft booths, will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The opening ceremony starts at 9 a.m. with the flag-raising, national anthem and a warm welcome.

There will be tractor and wagon rides scheduled, along with a strolling magician sharing deviously good magic throughout the day. Musical entertainment will also be held on the square.

Country Memories Day collectible commemorative items will be available, such as a limited-edition storage jar made by Hometown Potters’ Studio LLC in Lewistown.

There’s also a building replica of the “Common Ground” magazine, which was based in McVeytown.

They are available for sale on the square in the gazebo. “Common Ground” highlighted the life experiences in the Juniata Valley.

The entire collection of building replicas will be on display in the McVeytown Museum at the Rothrock Community Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was also a plate collection to commemorate the day,” Coppersmith said. “Sis Norton, who still lives in McVeytown, is the curator of the museum. Her knowledge of the memorabilia items and the history of the town is expansive.”

There will also be a patriotic basket raffle, which includes these commemorative collectibles. Tickets will be sold near the gazebo. Proceeds benefit the Community Giveback Project.

Additionally, the McVeytown Lodge No. 376 Free and Accepted Masons, or Masonic Lodge, will host a living history experience as well as a Gen. George Washington impersonator from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will conduct free tours of the lodge until 3 p.m.

A tractor and antique and classic car cruise-in is slated, with registration starting at 9 a.m.

For the kids, vendors will offer sand art and bowl pixie dusks as well as do-it-yourself stations. There will also be free face painting and balloons.

Due to very crowded streets, people are asked to leave their pets at home.
