A quieter night offensively as Rays come up short against Mariners - Tampa Bay Times

SEATTLE — After scoring a season-high 15 runs in an offensive onslaught Friday, the Rays didn’t manage to even get their first hit until the sixth inning Saturday.

That they got only four others was a big part of their problem in losing 8-3 to the Mariners. That ended the Rays’ three-game winning streak, and their season-long hold on the majors’ best record, as they dropped to 57-29 (.663) and behind the Braves (55-27, .671).

Tyler Glasnow gave the Rays an overall solid start, working into the sixth, allowing three runs while scattering seven hits and striking out 11. Jalen Beeks, called up Saturday morning and traveling to Seattle from Jacksonville, took over and allowed the Mariners to expand their lead in the seventh.

The Mariners grabbed an early 2-0 lead off Glasnow. A two-out double by Jarred Kelenic, a wild pitch and a Mike Ford single led to a run in the second. A leadoff home run by J.P. Crawford in the third provided another.

The Rays were shackled by Mariners starter George Kirby through the first five innings, managing just two walks. Yandy Diaz got their first hit, with a one-out double in the sixth, and an out later Luke Raley delivered their second, a two-run tying homer.

But the Mariners grabbed the lead back against Glasnow. Teoscar Hernandez doubled with one out, after Glasnow hit Eugenio Suarez with two outs. Kelenic delivered again with a single to left.

Beeks took over with the bases loaded in the sixth and got the final out.

But he made a mess to start the seventh, loading the bases on a walk and two singles, then allowing a two-run double to Hernandez. A sac fly by Suarez made it 6-3.

The Rays challenged in their eighth with one-out singles by Christian Bethancourt and Diaz, then an RBI single by Wander Franco. But Raley grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The Mariners added on in the eighth against Robert Stephenson.
