Reports: Players come back at MLB with 89-game proposal - Yahoo Sports

The Major League Baseball Players Association came back to the league Tuesday night with a proposal anchored by an 89-game season, according to multiple reports.

The players asked for full pro-rata salary across the 89 games, something that will be a sticking point with the league.

This latest proposal reduces the union's ask from a 114-game 2020 season to a much more manageable, and logical, 89 games. It's well above the non-starter 50-game amount the league floated late last week.

The season would run from July 10-Oct. 11, according to reports. A crucial thing to owners is ending the season around its normal conclusion. They fear a fall spike in coronavirus infections could wipe out the postseason, which is one of baseball's bedrock revenue creators.

The calendar proposed by the players is close to something the league could ultimately accept. They will reject this proposal on the whole, wanting to lower the total number of games as well as the percentage of salaries paid to the players. More games without fans means more losses for the owners. More games played means more salary for the players. This is a fundamental split they are trying to bridge.

The Wall Street Journal also reported the players' latest proposal includes a joint fund with the league to produce $5 million for minor-league players and social justice. This is a two-fold benefit for the players: first, it's the right thing to do. Simple enough. Second, they just leveraged the owners into saying no to such a concept amid a surge in protests across the country following the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers.

The players also again included expanded playoffs this year and next.

Lacking are the parameters for an acceptable health protocol. The hard stance the players are taking on salary reductions will also continue to complicate the negotiations. And, eye-rolls are acceptable after it took until June 9 for any semblance of a palatable proposal to exist.

So, this is not a conclusion or perfect. But, it's closer to reasonable.
