Miss Suzy had her first baby in our hallway.
“Mom, she’s making a funny sound,” my then four-year-old daughter called out to me. Sara was holding our white, blue-eyed cat in her arms when kitten number one dropped, literally, to the cool tile floor.
Suzy scooped up her newborn and ran under my bed. I pushed some clean towels under the bed just in time for kitten number two to drop softly on them. On our hands and knees, heads poked under the bed, Sara and I watched in wonder. It was the first cat birthing for both of us.
How many more babies might be coming? Did they each need their own towel? It turned out two was her limit. Soon Yin and Yang, mirror images of their handsome short-haired mom, were the focus of our household, winning our hearts with their nonstop cuteness.
As you can see, I am not against animals nesting on my property. With one stern-faced pointy-eared exception. While I understand that by living in the foothills we are technically in coyote territory, I am not offering a B&B to the C&C (coyote and cubs). Not, of course, that they feel the need to ask my permission.
A few days ago I learned from my neighbor that it is coyote pupping season. (Mazel tov and may your babies live and be well, just not at my place.) Sue came by this information honestly when she discovered a mom and three coyote pups had taken up residence under her deck. Soon they got comfortable enough in their new home to come to play on top of the deck, leaving unpleasant gifts.
Coyote pupping will go on for another six weeks or so, my neighbor was told by a wildlife expert. His advice: learn to live with them. You are in their neighborhood. He added that they generally nest in three different places. When I called Sue the next day to tell her I had found a “gift” and a coyote under my deck, she responded calmly.
“My house is condo number one and I think yours may be condo number two.”
OK, guys, I’m telling you right now, don’t expect clean towels.
