Apple fire remains at 30% contained; full containment could come Aug. 17 - Press-Enterprise

The Apple fire burning in the San Bernardino National Forest was 30% contained and had consumed 28,085 acres of timber, chaparral and tall grass as of Thursday morning.

Firefighters estimate full containment on Aug. 17. Containment is when firefighters create and hold a fire break around the perimeter of a wildfire. The break can be created by natural means, such as a stream or a river or roads and freeways, or by firefighters digging lines around the fire with bulldozers and hand tools.

The fire continued burning northeast into the San Gorgonio Wilderness, which has been closed to the public since Aug, 2. Work continued on the fire’s western edge to build defense lines for the mountain communities of Oak Glen and Forest Falls.

Oak Glen remained under an evacuation order Thursday, while Forest Falls, Pioneertown and Rimrock remain under evacuation warnings, meaning residents may be asked to leave if fire conditions worsen. Mandatory evacuations for Riverside County lifted earlier this week, although warnings remain in place.

Southerly winds for the San Bernardino Mountains were forecast Thursday for 15 to 20 mph, with gusts increasing from 25 mph to 30 mph in the evening, then receding, the National Weather Service said. High temperatures in the lower elevations, where the fire is burning, were forecast between 73 and 83 degrees.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District extended its smoke advisory through Thursday, Aug. 6, for the San Gorgonio Pass, east San Bernardino Mountains, Coachella Valley and east Riverside County.

The agency advised residents in those areas to limit exposure and stay indoors with windows and doors closed, seeking alternate shelter, and avoiding vigorous physical activity.

Investigators say the Apple fire was caused by a faulty exhaust system on a diesel vehicle just before 5 p.m. Friday, July 31, along Oak Glen Road in Riverside County’s Cherry Valley.

The fire has destroyed four homes and eight other structures. One firefighter was injured. Cal Fire estimates an estimated 2,586 homes in several communities had been forced to evacuate at the height of the fire, affecting 7,800 people.
