Letter: Housing can’t come at the expense of planet - Chico Enterprise-Record

We DO need housing — but not at the expense of a more-heated planet.

How we can experience sustained drought, mega-fires, violent hurricanes, incredibly rapid polar ice melt, rising seas, the extinction of so many plants and animals, and the rise of viruses, expanding in a heated planet — and not connect the dots?

Ten years ago the Chico Sustainability Group met with Chico City Staff, and invited a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to speak. He predicted in 10 years double the triple-digit days in August, and that prediction has now come true.

We absolutely do need housing, and there are other ways to build than sprawling projects like Stonegate and Valley’s Edge, which combined, according to Stonegate’s EIR, project 23,000 car trips a day and carbon emissions which cannot be mitigated.  The tragic irony is that this kind of building exacerbates climate change, and mega-fires like the Camp Fire increase the desperate need for housing.

When“ business as usual” threatens our children’s very future, we need developers instead to reimagine — to shift quickly — to renewable energy, electric cars and transit, and “smart growth.” We need significant incentives and infrastructure grants to build in underutilized properties closer to downtown, with walkable sidewalks, tree canopies, mixed use housing. This can be affordable and create a dynamic new lifestyle choice in Chico, but most importantly address climate change, and give our children a future. We’re all in this together. We need to connect the dots …
