After a hellishly long wait, Lucifer is back on Netflix with the first half of Season 5. The season wastes little time picking up the pieces from the jaw-dropping Season 4 finale. In fact, this half-season is so fast-paced and filled with so many twists and turns, you’ve probably already binged most—or even all—of it.
So, what’s next? When will Lucifer Season 5 Part 2 come out? And what’s up with Lucifer Season 6? Here’s everything we know so far, Luci-fans.
Does Lucifer Season 5 end on a cliffhanger?
Oh, you bet it does! That’s because this isn’t even the end of Season 5; it’s only Part 1 of Season 5. There are 8 more episodes on the way, and this cliffhanger sets them up. SPOILERS ahead.
The midseason finale, appropriately titled “Spoiler Alert,” ends with all of #TeamLucifer in complete disarray. Ella found out that her boyfriend Pete was really a serial killer, one who saw darkness within her. Daniel is still freaking out about the fact that Lucifer is, y’know, Lucifer. Amenadiel is completely fraught over the fact that his son Charlie may be completely mortal (his cold was just a cold!). Maze is supremely pissed at Lucifer for keeping the existence of her mother, Lilith, a secret from her. She’s so angry that she’s teamed up with Lucifer’s manipulative brother, Michael—and that liar’s even promised Maze a soul!
Michael’s manipulations don’t end there, either. He kidnapped Det. Decker and planted doubt in her head about Lucifer’s relationship with her. If Lucifer can’t tell a lie, then why has he not told Chloe that he loves her? And why is he suddenly invulnerable around her? She realizes that he’s stopped choosing to be vulnerable around her and, when she asks him to say that he loves her, he stutters and can’t get it out—and then Amenadiel stopped time to both prove that Charlie is mortal (celestial beings aren’t affected by his time stoppage) and prevent Charlie from aging and dying.
This led to a big brawl—Michael and Maze vs. Lucifer and Amenadiel. The only person who could break up this fight? God himself—played by Dennis Haysbert!
End spoilers!
When will Lucifer Season 5 Part 2 come out?
This is a tricky question. When it comes to half seasons, Netflix can space them out anywhere from two months to six months—or even longer. Then we have COVID-19 to factor in, which could delay the release even more. Even though it’s almost guaranteed that all of Season 5 has been filmed and is probably ready to go right now or close to it, it’s always possible that Netflix might want to space out new releases to ensure that they have new content scheduled well into the future.
But, then again, Netflix has a ton of content in the can already. Maybe they won’t need to space out these halves, and Lucifer Season 5 Part 2 will arrive at a normal pace—possibly before the end of 2020.
When will Lucifer Season 6 come out?
Even though Season 5 was originally announced as the end of the show, Netlfix redid their deal with the devil and extended it for a sixth season. This is, no doubt, where coronavirus will impact Lucifer. The show films in Los Angeles, and productions in California are only now, slowly and unsurely, getting underway again. Lucifer’s writers’ room is up and running right now, plotting out the final season of the show. So pre-production is underway, but we can’t yet tell when the show will get back in front of cameras.
