Like most of my fellow Democrats, I was devastated when Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, despite her winning the popular vote.
Reluctantly I had to face the fact that Hillary was not a strong candidate. And, perhaps because she paid too much attention to her pollsters, Secretary Clinton cut back on campaigning during the final crucial weeks.
Fast forward to November, 2020. Democrat Joe Biden defeats incumbent Donald Trump decisively — if not overwhelmingly — in both the popular vote and in the Electoral College. The response? Trump and his supporters call foul, repeatedly raising questions of election fraud and other irregularities.
None of these numerous allegations, investigations or recounts have turned up issues that could possibly change the outcome of the election.
And now, at the beginning of 2021, with the Inauguration less than three weeks away, Trump and many of his supporters seem hell-bent on overturning the will of the majority of America’s voters, along with the Electoral College!
If, by some miracle, they succeed, and the American people are sent the message that presidential elections don’t really count, then we can kiss democracy and our Republic goodbye.
The British couldn’t defeat us in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War could not successfully break up our country, we prevailed in two World Wars and we triumphed over world-wide communism. But if the loser of our presidential election can literally “declare” himself the winner, and get away with it despite the fact that he lost, then the America we love is no more.
I pray that the powers that be in Washington, D.C., believe the survival of the United States of America is more important than Donald Trump’s ego.
