Eagles Fans, Come Take a Seat - Philadelphia Sports Nation

With what has already been a whirlwind of an off-season, this ride is truly only getting started. Coach Nick Sirianni comes in and builds a new coaching staff that hopefully helps this team start building a new personality. An offensive, defensive, and special teams revamping may be exactly what the Eagles need to step forward and out of the Super Bowl shadow. Holding the sixth pick in the NFL draft is a favorable position for the Eagles to be in, with the caveat that Howie Roseman still has a job. Regardless, this high pick still provides for excitement amongst the fan base. Ja’Marr Chase? Micah Parsons? Devonta Smith? Kyle Trask? Just kidding. Some fans will love and some fans will hate whatever the Eagles decide to do with the pick, but gives hope for a franchise player possibly being brought in. There is some optimism about what can be.

However, I have some bad news. The Eagles are not going to win the NFC East title nor be above 8-8 for at least three years. I’m not excited about it either, but it’s time to start having the conversation and I’ll happily eat crow if I’m wrong. There is a lot more bad than good surrounding the organization right now, and I believe the remainder of the off-season is only going to get worse. We have a quarterback disaster, not controversy, that will have to play out sooner rather than later. Lots of big contracts for players that frankly were not performing to their contract value on top of having no money to spend during free agency. With cap space being at a minimum, this is when organizations hope they strike big in the draft. As long as Roseman is around, I do not see this being a realistic expectation for the Eagles “rebuild” if you will.

Only three years removed from the Super Bowl, you would think an organization would be in a better position, but here we are. Although the Carson Wentz saga ended Doug Pederson’s time in Philly, the problem has not gone anywhere. As the saying goes, “If you have two quarterbacks, you have none.” The quarterback is the most important position in the NFL, and since Eagles fans don’t even know who their starting quarterback is, I do not see this playing out seamlessly. And whoever is named the starter, the other half of Eagles fans are going to be upset. We got a Frank Reich prodigy (Coach Sirianni) to help Wentz, but then bring in a guy with a known Hurts connection (Brian Johnson). This will not be an easy decision and will have a lasting effect in Philadelphia.

In three years, the already old roster is going to be even older. Granted, many pieces will be changed between now and then, but our impact players will surely be headed for a career decline sooner rather than later. Jason Kelce and Jason Peters due for retirement soon enough. Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham are all 30 or older, so to expect them all to continue to be our impact players for the foreseeable future is delusional. Not only are the Eagles short of cap, a mess in the quarterback room, and have aging veterans, other teams in the NFC East are heading in the other direction.

Washington Football Team

This is the team I am most fearful of. Did you see that defense this year? Chase Young is going to be a problem for years to come and really anchored that defensive unit as a rookie. Sky is the limit with him. If Washington is able to get a serviceable quarterback (sorry, Alex Smith, as great as his story is, was NOT a serviceable quarterback and neither is Taylor Heinicke) as there will be many available in the off-season, could be a real threat in the future. Terry McLaurin is obviously a stud and would greatly benefit from a good quarterback coming in to elevate his game even more. Antonio Gibson, Peyton Barber, and J.D. McKissic showed they could be a strong running back tandem. Of all the teams in the NFC Beast, I believe they are sitting in the best position.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas is one of those teams that is up and down game-by-game and season-by-season lately. Obviously the injury to Dak Prescott was devastating, but Dallas did not cower and hide for the remainder of the season when they could have. Although they did play Ben DiNucci in three games. The defense was absolutely horrendous while Dak was putting up numbers at a fast pace, leading to three games the Cowboys certainly could have and should have won. The defense started to find its way towards the end of the season, and I do not anticipate them to be just as bad next year. I fully expect Dallas to pay Prescott, but figure out a way to move on from Elliott as his contract is awful. This is a good offensive team whose defensive will begin to find its identity.

New York Giants

Giants suck lol.

This is not a conversation I wanted to have, but think Eagles fans need to be aware of what is likely to happen. Going into the 2020 season, I would have never imagined we would be where we are now, but this is the reality. In a mere eight months, we are going to kick off the Sirianni project. My early projection is somewhere between 5-11 and 7-9. Although this would be enough to complete for the NFC east title this year, I don’t expect this to be the case for the next few years. Buckle in bird gang, this is only the first hill on this roller coaster.
