Congregations Come Together in Push for Affordable Housing - Bay News 9

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Supporters filled the parking lot at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinellas Park, in a socially distant rally, hoping to fill Pinellas with more affordable housing.

“There are more than 70,000 families across our county that are literally one paycheck away from homelessness.”, said rally organizer and FAST Affordable Housing Committee member the Rev. Lee Hall-Perkins, “They’re working two or three jobs to afford rent in our county.”

Hall-Perkins is part of the group “Faith And Strength Together” or FAST, bringing together 40 congregations across Pinellas County asking county commissioners to commit to approving funds from the Penny for Pinellas fund to help create affordable housing for families making $56,000 or less.

“We are not advocating for building large projects.”, said Hall-Perkins, “We’re all for supporting those who are most vulnerable.”

One of those people looking for affordable housing is Kitty Rawson’s son. He’s working but still is forced to live at home."

“He looked and visited places and called,” Rawson said, “He was not even trying for an apartment, he wanted a room where he had kitchen privileges. He could not find something affordable.”

County commissioners say it’s a challenging commitment.

"This county is obviously very densely populated," said commissioner Dave Eggers. "Land is hard to come by, so making these affordable housing deals so to speak is very difficult but we are absolutely committed to prioritizing those folks 80% AMI and under.”
