What happened to South Euclid’s ‘Come Together’ mural? - cleveland.com

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Some residents and observant motorists heading east on Mayfield Road have noticed something missing on the side of the wall of the House of Swing building.

That is the building that housed the colorful mural that exclaimed to all the uplifting, bonding phrase “Come Together” against a purple background adorned with flowers. The mural, although less than two years old, has been used by TV station videographers as a sort of placemaking landmark.

As of last weekend, the mural is still on the wall at 4490 Mayfield Road, but the “Come Together” part -- short for the city’s motto “Come Together and Thrive.” is not. It seems that the building’s new owner hired a painter to paint over the letters in matching purple.

South Euclid "Come Together" mural without the words

The mural as it now looks. The city is looking to work with the building's new owner to get the words restored.

As a result, the city has received communications asking what has happened to the mural’s message, and if it will be back. South Euclid Economic Development Coordinator Daniel Subwick, in an email response to cleveland.com, said he has attempted to contact the person who painted the mural in 2019, artist Lisa Quine, about again painting “Come Together” on the mural. Quine, however, has since moved to Texas.

“I reached out to her last night and hopefully we’ll be able to work together to rectify the situation with the owner,” Subwick stated.

The new owner is Beachwood resident Deangelo Speed, who presides over the company Change Horizon Housing, LLC. Speed said he painted over the words because he had not been made aware of the phrase’s significance or meaning, and because he is working on plans to brand his building. When asked if he would allow “Come Together” to again be painted on the very visible wall, Speed said, “I haven’t really made my final decision on that yet.

“Like I told (Subwick), I bought the building and I want to put my business name on the building, or what not,” Speed said. “It’s a situation where I’m not benefiting anything off it, that (Come Together) on the side of my property.”

The building is home to three storefronts. It is occupied on one end by the hair salon Perfect 10, and on the other, by A To Z Computer. The now-closed House of Swing, a jazz landmark, is located in the middle. It had been owned by Linda Kallie, who died unexpectedly last April. Kallie also owned the building and allowed as a favor to the city for the mural to be painted on the wall, with about $4,000 in funding from community development corporation One South Euclid.

The House of Swing has been closed since Gov. Mike DeWine issued stay-at-home orders in March, 2020. Speed, who bought the building about four months ago, said that a tenant will occupy the House of Swing storefront, a member of Kallie’s family, who will operate the same type of bar/music business.

Speed said he now understands that the mural has become a landmark. “I explained to Dan that when I erased it, I didn’t know. I thought the previous owners did it and it wasn’t beneficial to me.

“Nobody told me that was a ‘Welcome to South Euclid sign,’” he said. “If they (the city) had told me, I could have gone about it another way. I just thought the old owner had put it up and thought, ‘Let me take their brand off and put up my brand.’

“I’m not trying to be nasty to the city,” he said.

Another factor in whether the words are repainted, Speed said, is that the city would like for him to pay for the letters to again be added. Speed said he does not want to pay for the work.

“I’ve been getting a lot of calls about that (mural), and I have some ideas of my own for the building, just trying to build it back up to life,” Speed said. “It’s an old building and there haven’t been many renovations to it. I’ve been doing things on it just to get the businesses back going. With that being said, I want to make some changes outside, so I’m going to talk it over with my attorney, and see if they (the city will approve) some of the things I want to bring.”

When asked what plans he might have for the building, Speed said one might include adding a stone facade to the front of the building, and perhaps adding a garage door in front for walk-in traffic for the House of Swing.

“I was thinking of a patio type thing for when it gets hot outside, so you can sit outside and get a little breeze,” he said.
