Despite numerous wealthy countries reporting lower numbers of cases, globally the coronavirus pandemic is still raging on.

While the Americas still have the highest number of confirmed cases, followed by Europe, both regions are seeing decreases as vaccine rollouts continue. In contrast, areas such as Southeast Asia are seeing dramatic rises in new case numbers, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

India, one of the countries within the WHO’s Southeast Asia region designation, has logged an overwhelming 300,000 new daily cases the last five consecutive days

“It has put a huge stress on the health care infrastructure, the supplies, oxygen because of the fact that the quantum of materials required has gone four times what it was in the first wave,” said Naresh Trehan, chairman of Medanta Hospital.

Amid India’s deadly surge, President Biden and other world leaders have pledged to offer them aid and emergency resources, such as materials for vaccine production, rapid tests, personal protective equipment and ventilators.

Japan is another country causing concern. Slated to host the Summer Olympics in July, Japan has faced vaccination scandals as well as production and rollout setbacks. Only a little more than 1 percent of the country’s population has been vaccinated, and Tokyo is in its third state of emergency.

In the United States, more than 40 percent of the population had received their first dose of vaccine as of Sunday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 28.9 percent of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated.
