The loss by the first-place Lions (24-13, 17-8 SLC) allowed second-place UNO (21-16, 16-9 SLC) to pull within one game of Southeastern in the Southland Conference standings.
A windy, back-and-forth affair on the New Orleans lakefront, the Privateers answered every time Southeastern scored.
UNO starting pitcher Haden Erbe hit the first two batters of the game, leading to a pair of Southeastern runs. Evan Keller scored on Preston Faulkner's RBI single through the right side and Tyler Finke scored on Jacob Burke's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Privateers pounded out six hits in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-2 lead.
Southeastern regained the lead in the fifth. Christian Garcia drew a leadoff walk, advancing to second base on a foul out. Garcia scored on Burke's RBI single through the left side. After advancing on a wild pitch, Burke scored on Eli Johnson's RBI single to center field.
UNO scored on a two-out double in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 4-4, before the Lions jumped back in front in the sixth on Faulkner's 3-run, bases-clearing double down the third-base line.
The Privateers pounded out five more hits in the bottom of the sixth and took advantage of a pair of balks on the way to regaining the lead, 8-7.
An insurance run in the seventh proved to be the difference in the game. Southeastern loaded the bases in the ninth, picking up a run when Bryce Grizzaffi was hit by a pitch. The game ended on a double play, the third turned by the Privateers in the contest.
Reliever Jacob Lamkin (2-1) earned the win despite allowing three runs in one inning of work. Caleb Seroski earned his sixth save of the season, picking up the final two outs in the game. Will Warren (6-2) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs in 5.2 innings pitched.
Faulkner (3-for-4), Grizzaffi (3-for-4), Champ Artigues (2-for-5), Johnson (2-for-5) and Keller (2-for-5) picked up multiple hits each for the Lions.
