I am very tired of hearing that face masks are an assault on personal freedom, as if we have the freedom to do whatever we please, regardless of the consequences. Our personal freedom is restricted every day in all sorts of ways. We are required by law to observe traffic signals, wear seat belts, cover parts of our bodies with clothing, not smoke in certain settings, refrain from taking other people’s possessions or playing loud music late at night. Unbounded personal freedom is called anarchy. Civilization provides us with both rights and responsibilities to others. As a friend said: Your right to swing your arms ends where my face begins. Likewise, your right to avoid a mask (or a vaccine) ends where the community’s right to control an infectious disease pandemic begins.
