The Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals faced off for the final time of the 2021 regular season on Thursday afternoon, in a game that meant nothing for either team as their postseason scenarios have basically been set in stone. But Brett Anderson still took the mound and faced off against JA Happ, and the Cardinals got on the board first in the second inning.
Nolan Arenado got things going with a leadoff single, then he moved up to third when Paul DeJong doubled. Jose Rondon lofted a sacrifice fly to center, pushing the Cardinals ahead 1-0. In the top of the third, Milwaukee tied things up with a Luis Urias solo shot. The draw would last only briefly, however, as a solo jack by Dylan Carlson put St. Louis back on top, 2-1. The back-and-forth affair continued in the top of the fourth. Eduardo Escobar doubled to lead off for the Brewers, then moved to third on a single by Tyrone Taylor. Another single, this time by Omar Narvaez, plated Escobar to knot the game up at 2-2. Then Keston Hiura dumped a hit into center field, his first since late July, to put the Brewers on top, 3-2.
Anderson made it through 5.0 innings with two runs allowed for the Brewers, but the Cards got to reliever Miguel Sanchez in the sixth. Tommy Edman singled to lead off the frame, and then Dylan Carlson slugged his second home run of the afternoon to put St. Louis ahead, 4-3.
The Brewers failed to get a hit in the final three innings, so this game ended in a loss for them as the Cardinals continued to stay hot. Daniel Norris and Josh Hader did post scoreless appearances for Milwaukee to close out the game. Milwaukee still needs two more wins to set a new franchise record for single-season victories, but they’ll have to get them against the Dodgers over the weekend. The series starts on Friday night, with Eric Lauer slated to face Clayton Kershaw beginning at 9:10 PM central.
