In the Trenches: Sainristil Talks Nebraska Win, ‘This is What You Come Here For’

On this week's edition of the "In the Trenches" podcast, Jon Jansen chats with wide receiver Mike Sainristil about his great catch at Nebraska on Saturday, the impact of the evolving wide receiver room on the entire team, and why Saturday's game was so special to him.

Saturday's victory at Nebraska was massive for many reasons. The Wolverines stormed into the bye week with a perfect record intact. Michigan became the last team within the FBS ranks to trail in a game, yet the Wolverines overcame a pair of deficits to come out on top.

The emotions once the clock hit 0:00 in Lincoln were palpable. In front of a silenced Memorial Stadium crowd, the Wolverines celebrated a tremendous road win, one that has stuck with wide receiver Mike Sainristil in recent days. When asked about his favorite Michigan memory, Sainristil paused for a moment before rehashing his most recent one.

"Honestly, I would say Saturday's game. Since I've been here, we haven't been in an environment like that where we did come out on top," Sainristil told Jon Jansen on this week's edition of the "In the Trenches" podcast. "A few times during the game, I was telling myself, and I was telling a few teammates, 'You don't come to Michigan, not expecting to be in games like this. This is what you come here for.'"

Sainristil and the Michigan wideouts have not been the most statistically productive unit on the offense. That distinction belongs to the rushing attack, most notably Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins. However, the Wolverines' receivers have still made a significant impact in many areas, including the often-overlooked blocking side of the offense.

"Blocking is something that gets you going, and then it's also an easy way to get into people heads," Sainristil said. "Why not block, you know? If we, as a team, are going to say we'll do anything for each other, why not lay out (and) sacrifice my body for my guys?"

While blocking will still be a vital part of the wide receivers' collective role, Michigan has needed big plays through the air as well. Sainristil only logged two catches on Saturday night, but his first was a highlight-reel diving catch in the second quarter that led to a field goal. As the season progresses, Sainristil understands that more of those types of plays will be necessary.

"We understand the value that we have to the offense," he said. "With the way the run game is going, we understand that (there will be) a point during the season where we're going to have to step up and make plays."

While the Wolverines have been riding high into the bye week, plenty of work must be done. Sainristil said the team is focusing on film study for future opponents, maintaining sharpness on the field, and getting healthy for the second half, all while keeping a game-week mentality.

"We can't treat this week as if it's nothing. We have to treat it as if there was a game on Saturday, and just stay locked in on all the details. Stay locked in on the film. Just be ready to come out smoking next Saturday."
