After starting out slowly against the Highlanders, CSUB Director of Volleyball Giovana Melo said her team recalibrated and played more like the `Runners she knows: "We went back to focusing on making each other better during the hard moments. The two wins on the road were huge for us. This helps build momentum as we face two high-caliber teams next week."
Adding another victory to the win column, CSUB's record is now 10-4 (3-3 BWC) on the season. This marks the fastest the program has reached 10 wins since the 2005 season when those `Runners started the year 10-2.
Bakersfield's success on Saturday hinged on a well-rounded effort from the `Runners. CSUB combined to hit .216 on the night while holding UCR to just .131 on its home floor. The Bakersfield front line also tallied 11.0 team blocks against the Highlanders with Brooke Boiseau and Seleisa Elisaia leading that effort with eight blocks each.
Elisaia, CSUB's floor general, flirted with a quadruple-double for the second time this season as the setter finished the match with seven kills, 43 assists, 15 digs, and eight blocks. Right side hitter Milica Vukobrat paced all student-athletes on the night with a season-high 16 kills while Boiseau added a season-high 11 kills of her own. Vukobrat reached a big milestone on Saturday, registering her 500th career kill during the match.
Junior outside hitter Hayley McCluskey took a slow and steady approach on her way to 13 kills on Saturday. Paige Calvin (16) and Anna Unke (9) joined Elisaia (15) in guarding the `Runner side of the floor as the team combined for 69 total digs against UCR.
The Highlanders used an early, 6-1 spurt to pull ahead of the `Runners in the first set, 12-8. From an 18-14 disadvantage, CSUB went on a 3-0 run to pull within one point of UCR. Bakersfield did not let its host pull away, but the `Runners could not overcome the deficit and fell to UCR, 25-22.
Riverside jumped out to a 10-5 advantage in Set 2, but CSUB used a 4-0 run to make the score 12-11 and force the Highlanders to call a timeout. UCR led 18-14 and 22-16, but a 5-1 run by CSUB tied the score at 23-23. Bakersfield was unable to finish the comeback and the `Runner deficit became 2-0 on a 25-23 loss.
The third set followed suit as another close one, despite Bakersfield jumping out to an early lead. UCR took its first lead of the set at 18-17, but from a 21-20 advantage the Highlanders watched CSUB use a 4-0 run to catalyze a 25-23 victory, forcing a fourth set.
An early, 8-1 sprint blew open Set 4 for the `Runners, who surged ahead of UCR. CSUB never looked back, hitting .267 in that game to just .000 for the Highlanders, and the `Runners earned a 25-16 win and a chance to play the fifth set.
Bakersfield's momentum continued to roll into the deciding set. The `Runners held leads at 3-0, 6-3, and 9-4 before finishing off the comeback with a 15-9 win over UCR (4-12, 0-6 BWC).
CSUB will make a quick pit stop in Bakersfield before heading right back out on the road. The `Runners have a quick turnaround before heading to San Luis Obispo, Calif. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, to meet Cal Poly. CSUB will then board a plane for a business trip in paradise as the `Runners are set to square off with Hawai'i on Saturday, Oct. 16. Next week's matches will round out a four-game road stretch before CSUB can return to the Icardo Center for home contests against UC Irvine and UC San Diego, Oct. 22-23.
