Come to school in person or withdraw, Florida district tells students - Tampa Bay Times

The big story: The pressure continues to mount to keep schools open with kids in classes.

From the president on down, calls have grown to ensure that children attend schools in person regardless of the coronavirus. Children can’t wait, UNICEF leaders said, saying the disruption to students’ education has been too great.

The latest example comes from Orange County, one of the Florida school districts that originally fought the state’s ban on strict mask mandates. Until recently, the district allowed families to keep their children home if they had worries about coronavirus, even if their children weren’t infected or exposed.

They just had to keep up with their course work, which was posted online. The state no longer pays for districts to provide live remote instruction.

Now, the district has reversed its position. If parents want to keep their children home, they’ll have to withdraw and have the option of using home schooling or some other form of education instead, the Orlando Sentinel reports. There is an alternative, of course, WFTV reports: A visit from the truancy officer.

Tallahassee action

Legislative committees will again review proposals to limit classroom discussions about race. Democrats held a news conference to criticize the measures as a distraction from real issues, Florida Politics reports. LGBTQ advocates also have slammed the bill as discriminatory, Florida Politics reports. The House State Affairs Committee is scheduled to take up HB 7 at 9 a.m.

At the same time, lawmakers are advancing legislation to require district schools teach Asian-American history. They have bipartisan support, WMFE reports.

A Florida House committee supported a bill to reduce school board member pay and make it easier to challenge books in schools. The measure (HB 1467) does not match provisions in the Senate version (SB 1300), but they’re getting closer. The House proposal next heads to the full chamber.

Today in Tallahassee ... The House Education Committee meets at 10 a.m. to consider three bills. • The Senate Education Committee is scheduled to convene at 1 p.m., when it will review 12 bills.

Leadership

The University of Florida is getting ready to look for a new president. Trustees established a committee to begin working in March.

Four school districts are searching for superintendents. Experts say finding qualified candidates is harder than ever, WUSF reports. • The Broward County School Board will further review its three remaining finalists today, the Sun-Sentinel reports. • The Lee County School Board is expected to select its next superintendent today, WINK reports.

Other school news

Some Palm Beach County parents complained about a proposal to redraw their school attendance zones. The district responded by providing an alternate plan for public review, the Palm Beach Post reports.
