Come Alive Outside’s new board members bring experience and enthusiasm to organization - vtdigger.org

Come Alive Outside is pleased to announce the appointment of Olivia Lyons and Steve Costello to its board of directors. Vermont natives Steve and Olivia share not only a love of the outdoors, but also a background in journalism. Steve recently retired as the Vice President of Customer Care at Green Mountain Power. Olivia is currently the Communications and Marketing Manager for the Chamber & Economic Development of the Rutland Region. Both were friends of Come Alive Outside before they came on the board, with Steve serving on the organization’s steering committee.
Though a love of the outdoors is not a qualification to be on the Come Alive Outside board, both Olivia and Steve enjoy hiking and getting active outside. Steve is a nature photographer who loves creating portraits of wild creatures. He also enjoys kayaking and running along scenic routes. Olivia is a newly-minted snowboarder who also enjoys walking in the woods and paddleboarding.
The connection between physical activity outdoors and better mental and physical health is important to Steve and Olivia. “Being a very active person, I know that every time I spend time outdoors, I feel better afterwards,” says Steve. “There’s no such thing as a bad run or a hike or a paddle. No matter your mood at the beginning, you always feel better at the end.” Olivia also believes that “getting outside is medicine that can help you mentally and physically as well. Getting outside can cure a lot.”
Steve’s dedication to Come Alive Outside centers around its ability to “inspire kids, people who have not been active for a long time to start [being active] and then inspiring people who were fairly active to do even more. Having that little passport or chart whether you did your mile is really helpful.” Olivia appreciates the social aspect of Come Alive Outside’s programming. She believes that Come Alive Outside’s programming “can bring people together from all walks of life. I think it betters people while bringing them together. For example, teams and the 100 Miles challenge. You meet more people while doing something that you don’t realize is bettering you until after and then you might think, ‘Wow that was so great. I need to do that more often.”
As for what the future holds for Come Alive Outside, Olivia would like to see the organization become a household name. “I would like to see it inspire more people. And be the driving factor for people to fall in love again or for the first time with nature.” Steve agrees, saying, “I think that the potential is unlimited. It has really struck a chord in places it's been introduced. If the staff and board can maintain the energy level and vision, there’s no end to what it can do. I can see it having a true national footprint in the future coast to coast.”
