"I thought it was an evenly-battled game," head coach Craig Roberts said. "I don't think it was our best game this season, but I thought we had spells where we did very well."
The Panthers got off to a strong start away from home, as Siri Ott scored the opening goal in the 12th minute to give the visitors an early advantage. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Northern Iowa heading into halftime.
Southern Illinois started to generate more opportunities in the second half, eventually leading to the team's game-tying goal in the 64th minute. Spotak found space in the penalty area and found the back-of-the-net for her third goal of the season.
The Salukis had numerous chances throughout the match, with both McKensey Bunch and Sam Dodd narrowly missing the crossbar on a pair of opportunities. Overall, Southern Illinois out-shot Northern Iowa, 14-9, and had more shots-on-goal (5-4), in the 1-1 draw. Maddy Alaluf made three saves in-goal for the Salukis.
"The best thing is we're creating chances, but you have to convert them if you're going to win the big games," Roberts said.
Southern Illinois is now 6-3-3 overall and 3-1-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Salukis will remain at home next week as they host Murray State on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. and then Illinois State on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m.
