The Southern Illinois volleyball team lost to Illinois State in four-sets (23-25, 16-25, 25-23, 19-25) Saturday night in Normal, Ill.
The Salukis were unable to use the momentum from Friday night's match to mount another comeback on the road against Illinois State. Southern totaled 56 kills while hitting .310, slightly higher than the team's yearly mark of .252 which is the second-highest in the Valley. It was the eighth match of the year that SIU has hit .300 or higher.
SIU, who leads the MVC with 184 aces (1.94 per set), tallied just three on the night compared to Illinois States' 11. It was SIU's second-lowest season total on the year and the lowest since the Salukis played Northern Iowa. Furthermore, Illinois State was able to quickly turn things around for itself after being swept Friday night to Missouri State. The Redbirds hit .322, the fifth-highest hitting percentage from an SIU opponent this season.
Three Salukis tallied double-digit kills led by Nataly Garcia with 17. Since the Valley season began, Garcia has 232 kills which marks the second-most in the MVC in conference play.
Tatum Tornatta (14) and Annabelle Sulish (11) also reached double-digit kills in the four-set match while Imani Hartfield finished with nine kills and hit for .375.
Setter Anna Jaworski paced the Salukis offense once again with a match-high 48 kills to go along with nine digs. Jaworski continues to lead the Valley with 1089 assists (11.46 per set).
Freshman Claudia Bobb led the Salukis with 13 digs to increase her season-total to 393, sixth most in the Valley. She's one of just seven players in the Valley to average four or more digs a set.
With the loss, the Salukis move to 15-10 (8-5 MVC) on the year and will return home next weekend for the final two home matches of the season. First serve is set for 6 p.m. on Friday November, 4 as Indiana State comes to town. Saturday night the Salukis will host Evansville for a 5 p.m. start at Davies Gym.
