The Cleveland Browns rolled past the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals 32-13 on Monday night in Cleveland. Here’s what you need to know:
- The Browns held the Bengals scoreless until the fourth quarter, notching five sacks and one interception on Joe Burrow
- Amari Cooper had a season-high 131 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Nick Chubb added two touchdowns and 101 rushing yards
- Cleveland snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 3-5 on the season
- Bengals cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie (knee) and Tre Flowers (hamstring) both left the game with injuries and did not return
The Athletic’s instant analysis:
Browns come back to life
Complete domination. The Browns offered a reminder that they still have good players, and after their defense took almost a month off, it’s now bounced back with two strong performances.

Chubb ran all over the Bengals, the Browns’ offensive line was strong and Myles Garrett made multiple game-changing plays. The Browns seem to own Burrow, and they forced him into mistakes all night. This one was a laugher because the turnovers created a cushion and Chubb got to run with the lead. Jacoby Brissett had open receivers, too, and he generally found them. The Bengals have some serious soul searching to do; the 3-5 Browns are off next week, but at 2-1 in the division and the defense seemingly back, these Browns aren’t dead yet. – Jackson
Cincinnati’s offensive concerns stretch beyond Ja’Marr Chase
The Bengals’ offense didn’t pass its first test without Ja’Marr Chase. But this went far beyond the absence of their top receiver. This was about the return of offensive line issues that ruined their ability to exploit the intermediate middle of the field that had been so successful the last two weeks against New Orleans and Atlanta.
Here’s the thing, neither of those teams pose even reasonable pass rushes. The Browns and Myles Garrett are far more formidable. The way Burrow was punished and running for his life suggests the line improvement had more to do with recent opponents than the group themselves. Throw in a day where they couldn’t generate positive rushes against a poor Browns run defense and the red flag waves high in the sky. That’s a major concern considering the optimism surrounding the line figuring things out. – Dehner Jr.
Bengals’ injury woes continue
Injuries were an issue for this defense coming into the game, but depth players had done a nice job of overcoming them. The loss of Awuzie (right knee) is one they just could not afford. The depth behind Awuzie is suspect. More than that, he’d been playing at a Pro Bowl level all season. Add that in with the absence of D.J. Reader, also playing defensive tackle at a Pro Bowl level, and you have maybe the two best players on the defense this year out of the equation.

They were playing first-round safety Dax Hill at one corner alongside second-round corner Cam Taylor-Britt, who made his first career start. Flowers and Eli Apple both have hamstring injuries. If Awuzie’s injury ends up as serious as it looked, they will have to get very serious about trying to swing a deal for a cornerback if it’s possible before 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Even that would be an ineffective answer to what could be a season-altering problem. Awuzie’s injury dramatically changes the game for this defense. – Dehner Jr.
