Letters: Where did the guns come from? - St. Paul Pioneer Press

There are frequent stories about shootings and gun violence on the newspaper’s front page and even more on pages 2 and 3. A recent paper had a front-page story about a drug deal gone bad where the seller and the two buyers all had handguns. Where do these illegal weapons come from?  Are they all stolen from legal gun owners?  Is there any effort to find out how and where they got the guns? Have I missed the follow-up stories?

I believe that anyone who possesses and carries illegally or commits a gun crime has crossed the line, no matter what their age. They deserve to lose their most valuable irreplaceable asset, youth.

A roadblock to justice

If you haven’t heard Myon Burrell’s story by now as a Minnesotan, it’s time to pay attention.  His story has become national news since Sen. Amy Klobuchar bragged on the campaign trail about putting away 11-year-old Tyesha Edwards’s supposed killer, 16-year-old Myon Burrell, in 2002 and obtaining “justice” using paper thin and weak evidence while she was Hennepin County attorney. A different man, currently in prison for another crime, admitted in 2008 to the killing of Tyesha under oath, but he was ignored. The whole story and the details can be found in the Feb. 1 Associated Press investigation.

Last week, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman’s office released the following statement about the case: “This case is being politicized because it first arose when Amy Klobuchar was the Hennepin County Attorney … It should not be used as a political football.” Well, Amy Klobuchar herself made this case into a political football during her campaigns.  Journalists and legal experts merely took a closer look at it.

Amy initially oversaw the first trial, but Mike Freeman used the same evidence to reconvict Myon the second time. Mike Freeman’s public comments continue with, “…Any complaints should be directed to this office” (not Amy’s).  So far, Mr. Freeman has done nothing to address this potential injustice and re-open the case, but instead has defended the decision.  In the past and present, Mike Freeman has been very quick to prosecute and convict people of color in the community – where is that same urgency when it comes to making sure an innocent man isn’t sitting in prison?

So far, Mr. Freeman has proven that he is just like every other prosecutor who has sat in that office: the priority is a conviction, even at the expense of justice.

Perfect people

Do you know anybody who’s perfect? I been thinking about all the good people in the world. They all had their faults and some skeletons in the closet. Think about it, were they perfect? Did they cause a mistake or sin? Were they on drugs or alcohol?

Let’s all lighten up. Let’s get along with each other. Life is short. Live it to the fullest.

Enough said.

Flag logo

Over-taxation impacts 99% of Minnesotans, often resulting in a state budget surplus. State legislators always seem to be increasing various existing taxes and/or creating new taxes.

I think the logo on the Minnesota flag should be a lake with loons on it, above the logo the number “10,000,” and below the logo the word “TAXES.”

No serious consideration

Once again, on Feb. 3, I witnessed Minnesota’s Public Utilities Commission bow to short-term corporate capital gain by continuation of Line 3 vs. real concern for helping save life on this planet by curbing the impacts of increased carbon into the atmosphere and its impacts on climate change. This, in spite of Minnesota’s efforts to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels.

Particularly disconcerting is the idea of there being no other alternatives. The oil must flow; leaving it in the ground given little or no serious consideration.
