Democratic debate: Mike Bloomberg expected to come out swinging in South Carolina - New York Post

Seven Democrats were set to take the stage in South Carolina Tuesday night for the second presidential debate in a week, with Mike Bloomberg expected to come out swinging to try to erase memories of his lame performance in the Nevada debate last Wednesday.

Appearing onstage in Charleston from left to right will be Bloomberg, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and billionaire ex-hedge funder Tom Steyer, who didn‘t qualify for the Nevada debate.

Warren pilloried Bloomberg in the last debate, during which she was standing next to him.

The contest is the last time the candidates will share the debate stage before Saturday’s pivotal primary in South Carolina, and the candidates are expected to sharpen their attacks on frontrunner Sanders.

It’s also the last debate, the 10th in this election cycle so far, before Super Tuesday on March 3, when 14 states will stage primaries and 1338 delegates will be up for grabs.

The two-hour debate is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. New York time, and will be moderated by Gayle King, co-host of “CBS This Morning,” and “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell.

“Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan, “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker and chief CBS Washington correspondent Major Garrett will also get to grill the candidates.

CBS News and the Congressional Black Caucus sponsored the contest in the Palmetto State.

To qualify, each candidate had to win a delegate in either Iowa, New Hampshire or Nevada, hit 10 percent in four national polls or garner at least 12 percent in two surveys in South Carolina.

Under the rules laid out by the sponsors, there are no opening or closing statements.

The candidates will have 75 seconds to answer questions and 45 seconds to respond. All of the candidates will get to answer a closing question.

The next Democratic debate is set to take place in Phoenix on March 15.

A 12th and final planned debate will take place in April at a date to be announced.
