IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) - Students and community members of the University of Iowa came together last week to practice for Monday night's first in the nation Iowa Caucus.
It's just the third year in existence for the student-run initiative, Hawk The Vote and first year for the mock caucus. The organization aims to make students more comfortable and improve voter turnout.
The mock caucus event on January 31st focused on preparation for actual caucus night on February 3rd. Over 230 attendees showed up in the main lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.
In the Republican mock caucus, President Donald Trump won with 16 votes, followed by Joe Walsh with 10. Bill Weld rounding out the list with a total of 9 votes.
On the other side, Bernie Sanders came in at 72 votes, winning the Democratic mock caucus. Not far behind, Elizabeth Warren ending the night with 59 votes. Next on the list is Andrew Yang followed by Joe Biden then Pete Buttigieg. Last on the list with just 6 votes was Amy Klobuchar.
After the event, Hawk the Vote External Relations Manager, Kevin Drahos says the mock caucus allowed caucus goers in the area to become familiar with how Monday night will go. The hope is that more voters will turn out and feel comfortable with the process.
"This event was crucial in getting students prepared and ready to mobilize on February 3rd. We want to make sure students know what time the Caucus is starting. We want them to know they can change parties at the location. And we want to make sure they know where to go on campus."
