KALAMAZOO, MI — Have an old prom dress or any accessories taking up space in your closet and a desire to help create a special night for someone else this spring?
Beginning today, people can drop off gently-used prom dresses, as well as accessories such as jewelry, shoes, purses and wraps at one of three Comerica Bank locations in Kalamazoo County.
Comerica will provide the donated dresses and accessories to The Cinderella Project of Kalamazoo, a nonprofit which coordinates a one-day, annual event providing free prom dress and accessories to high school students in need.
“For nearly 15 years, The Cinderella Project of Kalamazoo has provided a much-needed service to the community, and we proudly support their passionate efforts to positively impact West Michigan youth as they help create memorable experiences,” Debra VanHevele, senior vice president and regional retail director for Comerica Bank stated in a news release from the company.
“The prom represents such a special moment in a teen’s life, but unfortunately, many do not have the resources available to attend for a variety of reasons. We want to continue changing that by supporting the dedicated efforts of nonprofits, like The Cinderella Project, so more teens have the opportunity to live out their prom dreams," VanHevele said.
This year’s giveaway will take place from 3-7 p.m. Friday, March 27 at the Girls Scouts Heart of Michigan, located at 601 W. Maple St. in Kalamazoo. For more information, click here for the Facebook event page.
Any high school girl in need of the organization’s services is welcome to attend the event and no proof of financial hardship is necessary, the project’s website states. Girls must attend in person to receive a free dress, and must also bring a valid school ID or proof of enrollment.
Originally founded in 2006 as a partnership between Memories and The Junior League of Kalamazoo, The Cinderella Project’s goal is "to make sure every young lady that wants to attend prom has the opportunity to do so no matter what her personal or financial hardships,” according to the nonprofit’s website.
Last year the project helped make prom dreams come true for a record 283 girls from 62 different schools, according to its site.
Comerica, which hopes to help drive that number up, is participating in the Kalamazoo area for the first time this year. The bank launched a similar Prom Dress Drive in 2017 in metro Detroit and over the past three years has donated more than 4,500 dresses to Hope Closet to help teens in and around the city, according to the news release.
“Without partners like Comerica, we wouldn’t be able to collect and donate dresses for hundreds of high schoolers in the Kalamazoo area and provide all of them the opportunity to attend their prom, regardless of personal or financial hardships,” said Adrienne Wissner founder of The Cinderella Project of Kalamazoo.
From March 6-20, dresses and accessories can be dropped off at the following Comerica Bank locations:
Dresses and accessories intended for The Cinderella Project can also be dropped off year-round at Memories Bridal & Evening Wear in downtown Kalamazoo or seasonally at The Prom Shop by Memories at RiverTown Crossings Mall in Grandville.
