Any attempt by President Donald Trump to appropriate Sir Winston Churchill’s image as a wartime leader defies history.
In “The Splendid and the Vile” (2020), author Erik Larson shows how Churchill’s voice as prime minister in 1941 became a reassuring wellspring of hope and resolve for millions of people seeking to survive.
Churchill’s words and ideas united the West in defense against Nazi domination.
In contrast, we as a county and our Western allies must now unite to defend ourselves against the vile, crude and divisive voice of a president who lacks any ability to mobilize the English language in the service of a higher purpose, as Churchill did.Oscar RosenbloomPalo Alto
