When my husband and I were in the market for a new home about 10 years ago, we had certain requirements that house needed to fulfill -- a spacious kitchen, an attached garage, and a comfortable master bathroom. The latter was important, because in our previous house, we'd found ourselves routinely battling it out for space in front of our small master bathroom sink, and actually stepping on each other's toes as we moved between the vanity and shower.
In our new home, we insisted on a larger master bathroom -- but that wasn't all. We also wanted certain features that would make that space even more usable and shareable, and now, 10 years later, I can say that I'm particularly grateful for the following.
1. Double sinks
Many couples share a single bathroom sink and get by just fine. But I'm the type who needs room to spread out and groom, and so the fact that my husband and I each have our own sink has spared us many a quarrel through the years. The larger countertops that house our double sinks help as well. That way, we have plenty of room for our toiletries without infringing on each other's space.
2. A separate shower and tub
One of my favorite indulgences is lounging in the bathtub with a good book. As such, I always wanted a separate shower and tub in my master bathroom so that I could take my time soaking without having to worry about my husband coming in and needing the shower. This setup has worked out well for us. Some nights, I'll hop in the tub after a long day of work, and when he gets home from his workouts, he can shower without kicking me out or getting in my way.
3. A separate toilet room within the bathroom
Let's be real: Toilets can produce some unsavory smells while they're in use. When your master bathroom toilet is right next to your sink and someone comes in and uses it while you're brushing your teeth or washing your face, it can make for a very unpleasant experience. Thankfully, our master bathroom has a small toilet room, so to speak, with a door attached to it that closes fully. That way, if one of us (usually me) is soaking in the tub or washing up at the sink, the sounds and smells of the toilet are masked by that barrier. (And, yes, having a rule where only one person uses the bathroom at a time, period, could also solve this problem. But this way, we don't have to enforce that restriction.)
Having a spacious master bathroom with the above features has led to more harmonious living in my home. If you're considering a master bathroom remodel, it pays to think about incorporating some or all of the items above. Chances are, you'll really appreciate them once you have them, and when the time comes to sell your home, there's a good chance you'll recoup a lot of the money you spent making them happen.
