COVID-19 is set to globally change the public health landscape for a long time. Its economic and social impact will last for years to come disrupting health and wellbeing of billions. Approaches may have to change including a rethinking of resources and programme orientation.
As a visionary document, the 2030 Road map for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) proposes a new model of operation, setting out a brighter future. Its importance is even more relevant as we deal with the pandemic. The roadmap seeks to promote resilience, health system strengthening, equity and country ownership.
On Wednesday 17 June, the World Health Organization (WHO) will kick off a series of webinars dedicated to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
Two panels of policy-makers, health officials, partners and advocates will discuss the shifts needed to recover NTD interventions from disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions will also focus on the role of countries and partners in steering the integrated approaches identified in the new road map.
First panel: Essential shifts for post COVID-19 recovery and 2030 success
- Building on progress; innovative approaches to sustaining progress;
- Highlighting the shifts needed to achieve new road map 2021-2030 targets;
- High level view of the post COVID-19 world in respect to NTD, the changes and challenges
Second Panel: Partnerships, collaboration & integration for impact: the key to 2030 success?
- Aligning and coordinating work with countries, partners, pharma
- Enhancing multisectoral coordination to achieve global targets
- Critical work of health workers and volunteers and their work across platforms.
