‘You can’t erase us:' Watch the Black Lives Matter mural come together in Kalamazoo - MLive.com

KALAMAZOO, MI — On the ground, it was a flurry of activity as professional and amateur artist alike, armed with paint rollers and brushes, painted huge block letters along the center lane of South Rose Street.

A few hundred feet above, the larger image became clear. Black Lives Matter, in all capital letters, stretched 200 feet between Lovell and South streets in downtown Kalamazoo.

Part of the community’s Juneteenth celebrations on Friday, June 19, the street mural is the latest in a trend of similar public art projects seen in cities elsewhere in Michigan and across the country in recent weeks. The artistic statements come in the wake of demonstrations and unrest prompted by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd, who is black, died May 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

One of those participating in Kalamazoo was artist Darien Burris, who explained the message behind the paint that was put on the pavement Friday.

“It’s about receiving equity when it comes to education, housing, resources,” Burris said. “This mural is just a statement to say, like, ‘We’re here and we’re not going anywhere. You can’t erase us.' But, this mural is for you to see and for you to interact with. But the movement is so much bigger.”
