Father, son doctors sharing a shift ‘a dream come true.’ - Houston Chronicle

If you call out for “Dr. Torre” at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, two heads may turn in response.

On Tuesday, Aug. 18, Dr. Michael Torre and his father Dr. Paul Torre joined each other, treating patients at the same time.

For Dr. Paul Torre, it was a lifelong dream to work alongside his son in the emergency room. He just never thought it would be during a pandemic.

“Nobody could have imagined this,” he said.

Originally from New Jersey, Paul has worked in emergency medicine for about 34 years, serving as assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, medical director of San Jacinto Methodist in Baytown and a founder of enTrust Immediate Care, before he began practicing emergency medicine at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital.

Currently, he is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and also works shifts at Ben Taub Hospital.

Paul maintains that he never encouraged his son to follow in his footsteps.

“You can’t push Michael,” he explained. “You can’t tell Michael what to do.”

Still, having a father in medicine helped Michael make the decision to pursue the career.

“I grew up with a doctor in the house, who still seems to like his job,” Michael said. “It was definitely a positive influence.”

Michael, who currently lives in Pearland, was born in Houston and grew up in Clear Lake.

In high school, he gravitated toward science, particularly chemistry and biology.

“I knew I wanted to do something where I worked with people, not just sitting in an office,” Michael said. “In medicine, you get to help people.”

After graduating from Rice University, he enrolled in the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, then to his residency in Philadelphia.

Paul couldn’t help but feel enthusiastic when Michael, then in the midst of his rotations, mentioned he was feeling a pull to emergency medicine.

“He told me, ‘Dad, I’m thinking about either doing radiation or emergency medicine,’” Paul recalled. “That’s when I started to lobby.”

And when Paul accepted the post at Baylor College of Medicine, he kept his privileges at Memorial Hermann Southeast -in case Michael ended up there as well.

Then, everything fell into place.

After completing his residency, Michael interviewed at hospitals in Dallas and Houston.

“The game plan was always to move back,” he said. “I love Texas. I always wanted to live in Texas.”

Last summer, Michael accepted a job at Memorial Hermann Southeast.

“It was kind of weird stepping in somewhere where everyone knew my dad,” he admitted.

Paul offered to work Michael’s first shift together . “But he wanted to grow his own wings,” Paul said.

After a year, they decided to make it happen.

Paul arrived at the hospital early on Aug. 18; Michael was already there. Both doctors were immediately immersed helping their patients. After all, they were in the ER during COVID-19.

When Michael passed his father in the hallway, he gave him a nod and kept moving. It just felt natural.

Emergency doctors tend to have a similar personality - one he believes he and his father share.

At one point, Paul and Michael were caring for two members of the same family. “There was a Torre on each chart,” Paul said. When one family member worried about the other, Paul said, “The best doctor I know is taking care of your family.”

On their second shift together, the following day, father and son were able to work together more.

“It was fun,” Michael said.

Paul won’t always be able to work with his son, since he has a full-time job at Baylor. Still, he enjoyed seeing Michael in action - and listening to what his co-workers had to say about him

“They all speak so highly of him,” Paul said. “And it’s great to hear when people tell you how awesome your kid is.”

Practicing together was a dream come true.

“It’s one of the best days of my life,” Paul said. “I’ve done a lot of cool things over the years, this is the biggest rush I’ve ever had.”
