President Donald Trump said on Monday that he would move quickly to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court, saying an announcement on a nominee would come Friday or Saturday.
In an interview on "Fox & Friends," Trump also said he was looking at four or five potential nominees. He has previously said he would choose a woman to replace Ginsburg.
The timeline, however, appears to be fluid. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said earlier Monday morning that it was "very likely" Trump would name his choice to replace Ginsburg as soon as Tuesday.
"It will be a very quick turn of events," McEnany told "CBS This Morning," adding: "You will certainly be hearing this week who that nominee is."
Pressed on whether Trump's pick would come before Wednesday, McEnany said: "I think that's very likely, but I'll leave that to the president."
Since Ginsburg's death Friday, the White House and most Senate Republicans have announced their intention to move rapidly to confirm her replacement on the nation's highest court.
The brutal confirmation battle less than 50 days from the November election has already been complicated by charges of hypocrisy from leaders of both major parties — after Republicans blocked former President Barack's Obama's Supreme Court nomination of Judge Merrick Garland in the final year of his presidency.
