Peeps won't come in Halloween, Christmas shapes this year due to COVID-related production shutdown - USA TODAY

Peeps, the popular colored marshmallows shaped like baby chicks, won't come in Halloween or Christmas shapes this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company said in a statement to USA TODAY.

Peeps manufacturer Just Born typically transforms its soft snacks into the shape of ghosts, pumpkins and Christmas trees and releases them near the end of the year. The candied marshmallows are perhaps best known as an Easter basket staple.

Earlier this year, Just Born had to temporarily shut down due to the coronavirus crisis, and because of that, the seasonal varieties of Peeps will not be in stores again until 2021, the company said.

"In early May, we resumed limited production after making extensive changes in our plant that ensure the safety of our associates," Just Born said in a statement.

"This situation resulted in us having to make the difficult decision to forego production of our seasonal candies for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day in order to focus on meeting the expected overwhelming demand for Peeps for next Easter season."

Also, Just Born said its holiday-themed Mike and Ike and Hot Tamales candies won't be coming out this year. The company will resume its regular seasonal offerings starting with Halloween 2021.
