It’s over: 49ers can come home after 26-23 season-ending loss to Seahawks - San Francisco Chronicle

Last year, the 49ers celebrated wildly after beating the Seahawks in their regular-season finale. They were going to the playoffs as the NFC West champions and a No. 1 seed.

On Sunday, the 49ers might have also been celebrating like mad after losing to the Seahawks in their regular-season finale. They were going home, not a moment too soon.

The 49ers ended their forgettable season with a 26-23 loss to Seattle in Glendale, Ariz., after which they went to board a plane and return to the Bay Area for the first time since they began their relocation in Glendale on Dec. 2.

The 49ers (6-10) finished their unwanted stay in the desert on another down note after they were undone by a longtime nemesis, quarterback Russell Wilson, who directed a comeback from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit.

The 49ers led 16-6 early in the final quarter, but Wilson responded by directing touchdown drives of 75 and 85 yards, respectively, that he capped with touchdown passes to wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

The Seahawks (12-4) took a 19-16 lead with 2:26 left on Wilson’s 4-yard floater to Lockett in the left corner of the end zone on 4th-and-goal. They upped their edge to 26-16 after quarterback C.J. Beathard lost a fumble that was recovered at the 49ers’ 17-yard line, leading to an 8-yard scoring run by running back Alex Collins.

The 49ers finished the scoring on Beathard’s 3-yard pass to running back Jeff Wilson with 23 seconds left.

The 49ers were in position to pull off the upset thanks to yet another stout performance from the NFL’s fifth-ranked defense, a late-arriving effort from the offense and a brilliant NFL debut by kicker Tristan Vizcaino.

In what might have been the final game of defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s four-season tenure, the hot head-coaching candidate might have earned a few more job interviews.

Before Wilson began the 24th fourth-quarter comeback of his career, the 49ers had limited the NFL’s seventh-ranked scoring offense to six points in the first 45-plus minutes.

Meanwhile, the 49ers’ offense, which opened with punts on its first four possessions, responded with four straight scoring drives — netting three field goals and a touchdown — to take the 16-6 lead.

The field goals, of 36, 47 and 33 yards, were provided by Vizcaino, who had his only practice with the team Friday and was playing because Robbie Gould was on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The offense was inert for most of the first half. After 24 minutes, the 49ers had 20 net yards, one first down and four punts after running 17 plays.

However, trailing 6-0, they finally awoke when Beathard completed a 45-yard pass to wide receiver Richie James on 3rd-and-14 that led to Vizcaino’s first field goal.

The 49ers opened the second half with back-to-back drives that netted field goals to take a 9-6 lead.

With the game tied 6-6, they took the lead shortly after one of the most spectacular catches of tight end George Kittle’s career: As Kittle was running toward the right sideline, he reached behind to snag the nose of the football with his right hand for a 41-yard catch down to Seattle’s 8-yard line.

The 49ers took a 10-point lead less a minute into the fourth quarter after Wilson capped a 73-yard drive with a 7-yard run.

The Seahawks answered immediately. They closed to within 16-12 with 11 minutes left on Wilson’s 6-yard pass to t Lockett on 3rd-and-goal.
