Cardinals Come Back To Beat MAC Leader Toledo - BallStateSports.com

MUNCIE - Down 16 early in the game only to lead by 18 late in the game, the Ball State men's basketball team picked up an 81-67 victory over MAC-leading Toledo on Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals, who snapped a four-game loss streak and still playing without their leading scorer, trailed 19-3 in the game's opening minutes before chipping away and pulling away with a 47-point second half. Six players, led by Jarron Coleman, scored in double figures for BSU. Coleman, playing his sixth game since returning from a foot injury, scored 19 points with nine rebounds and four assists.

Luke Bumbalough scored 14 points and Miryne Thomas had 13 points and seven rebounds. Brachen Hazen had his second double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

"We had a lot of guys step up when we needed them to, Coleman said. "Next man up. Everybody played great as a team."

Toledo (16-5, 11-2) got 13 points from JT Shumate and 12 from Keshaun Sanders. UT had previously lost just once in MAC play, a 96-95 loss to Akron.

TURNING POINT: After the fast start, the Rockets ran out of fuel. UT led 26-15 with about 8 minutes left in the game but the Cardinals answered with a 16-5 run to tie the game at 31. Bumbalough scored four points and Thomas and freshman Teemu Suokas each hit a 3-pointer during the rally. The Cardinals trailed 36-34 at the half, but Thomas scored the first five points of the second half - including an emphatic dunk - to give the Cardinals the lead. Ball State took control with an 11-1 run later in the second half and grew the advantage in the final minutes.

STRAIGHT FROM THE COACH: "I thought our leadership - Brachen and Ish and Blake Huggins - have done a great job of really keeping our team together and grinding during this kind of hard stretch," head coach James Whitford said. "We played with great energy and a lot of guys played well, but I really thought our leadership helped us get through these two really tough games that we just had. Obviously, a lot of our guys did a great job but but Luke certainly deserves a lot of credit and I thought he learned the lessons from the Buffalo game and was able to apply them today. We're getting better defensively. Now we're not where we where we want to be or think we can be as we get whole as a team and have a chance to kind of re-orchestrate in our roles."

LONG-RANGE ATTACK: The Cardinals shot 15-for-37 from 3-point range on the day, making eight treys in the first half and seven in the second. Bumbalough made four 3-pointers and Thomas and Coleman each hit three. It was the highest mark of the season for 3-pointers in a game for Ball State, which also limited Toledo to 7-for-32 shooting from long range.

AT THE RIM: Ball State came into Saturday's game with just 10 dunks all season, but had a season-high five dunks in the victory. Colemand and Hazen each dunked twice and Thomas's slam early in the second half sparked the Cards to go on a big run.

UP NEXT: Ball State has its next two games on the road in the state of Michigan. BSU is at Central Michigan Tuesday night and at Eastern Michigan next Saturday.
