Colonials come up short, losing to Northern Kentucky 1-0, in 2OT - Pittsburgh Soccer Now

Robert Morris University women’s soccer team dropped a double-overtime decision to Northern Kentucky Wednesday morning, 1-0.

NKU’s Sophia Wilmes broke the scoreless affair in the 104th minute to hand Robert Morris its second loss of the season

The Norse outshot RMU (20-13, 10-5 on target) as the Colonials’ goalkeeper Courtney Worstell had nine saves.

The Colonials did well to keep the Norse attack bottled up for much of the opening half, limiting runs into dangerous areas and shutting down passing lanes in their own defensive third of the field.

Krista Kania saved what looked like as prime scoring chance with a big block near the edge of the box, heading away a strike from NKU’s Lindsey Meyer to prevent an early deficit for RMU.

RMU pressed on and slowly but began to pressure the NKU back line on numerous counter opportunities.

Newcomer Kaoru Hayashi earned a number of good looks but fired a pair of strikes wide, while Sheridan Reid’s volley from 15 yards out was swallowed up by the Norse keeper.

NKU appeared to make it 1-0 near the end of the opening frame, however the flag was raised for an offside call seconds after the Norse managed to knock in a loose rebound.

Both squads continued to work the midfield in the second half, with the Colonials starting to connect on more through-balls in attack.

Gabriella Lecuona earned another good look for RMU with a hard strike inside the box, but the effort was again swallowed up.  Meanwhile, Worstell stood tall at the other end of the field for RMU, stuffing a shot on goal from Kaya Vogt.

A late bout of attacking pressure including a pair of corners threatened to put the Norse up late, but some solid defensive positioning in the box prevented NKU from converting as the game dragged on into extra time.

Despite a tight game for the first 13 minutes of extra time, NKU’s Wilmes managed to find the back of the net as the match dragged over the 100 minute mark to earn the road win.
